Maybe the success in minors and some good ratings in an area make a difference. In McAuliffe's case he was just drafted and played 10 games in minors (.341 avg) before being called up.
Ive never thought of "player development speed modifier downward" as Ive never even looked at that option before.
Here is his profile. I think the very good Defensive ratings helped, but still dont like 17 and 18 year olds coming up.
