I'm a F2P player, and this year it seems easier to complete a lot more missions. Simply by ripping packs that I've won in the <= Bronze tourneys, I've completed all of the live series missions and most of the Bronze BAL, and some Silver.
The key is to earn packs by spamming tourneys that you can win. This can be tough if you can't access the game for a few minutes every hour or so to start tourneys, but if you have access to it, it's a good way to keep interested in your team.
I agree with everything you said about losing interest after a few months. That's happened to me since the beginning of PT. Then I just go back to the original game.
