In the bottom of the first, the Pirates loaded the bases with two out. Lima missed on a full count pitch and the Pirates first run of the season scored on a bases loaded walk. Meares followed with a two-run single.
In the bottom of the second, Morris got an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the third, Biggio broke the Astros 10-inning scoreless streak with a 424 foot two-out solo home run.

In the top of the fifth, Alou tied the game with a 361 foot two-out three-run blast.

In the top of the seventh, with a runner on first and one out, Josias Manzanillo took the mound for the Pirates. Alou delivered the go-ahead RBI single.
In the top of the eighth, Jason Christiansen took the mound for the Pirates. The Astros loaded the bases with two out. Spiers singled to score one but, on the play, Cordero threw Roger Cedeno out at home as he tried to score from second.
In the bottom of the eighth, Octavio Dotel took the mound for the Astros.
In the top of the ninth, following a lead off walk, Scott Sauerbeck took the mound for the Pirates.
In the bottom of the ninth, Billy Wagner took the mound for the Astros with a two-run lead to protect. With a runner on first and two out, Young popped up to the catcher to end the game.
The Astros got 11 hits in the win.
