Gep Goes Deep Twice in 18-7 Swatters Win
The Diamond City Swatters dumped the FHE Yao Guai, 18-7, in large part due to first baseman Oren Gep. On the day, Gep went 4 for 6 with 2 home runs and 2 singles, while scoring 3 times and driving in 6 for the Swatters. Diamond City, at 67-29, has already clinched the South Charles Association Railroad League.
With Diamond City leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Gep hit a fastball from David Kiwi for a 2-run home run. It was his 23rd home run of the season and put the Swatters ahead, 3-0.
"If it's down the middle," said Gep, "you might as well hit it."
Juras Swats 2 Homers, Hancocks Top Mirelurks, 12-6
The Goodneighbor Hancocks relied on the hitting of third baseman Jason Juras to stop the Warwick Mirelurks, 12-6. For the game, Juras hit 2 home runs. He scored 4 runs and drove in 2. Goodneighbor is now 64-32, 5 games up in the South Charles Association Minutemen League.
Good Don Duck was a prime contributor to the Goodneighbor win. He was 3 for 6 with a double and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. In the top of the sixth with no one out, the two-time All-Star hit a 2-run single. It made the score 6-4, in favor of the Hancocks.
"It was a solid team effort," Juras said. "That's usually what it takes to win."
Boohoo Excels, But Dwellers Win
The Egret Ninjas got a superb performance from first baseman Kyle Boohoo. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Vault 81. The Dwellers won the game, 10-9. Boohoo slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Vault 81 reliever Dave Caveman picked up the win, upping his record to 8-4. Chris Grandchester was saddled with the loss. The win boosted Vault 81 to 52-44.
Sam Farland helped the Vault 81 cause in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases empty, he hit a solo home run.
"It wasn't a pretty victory," said Farland, "but we got it done."
Vault 81 and Egret have been advised by the league commissioner that the Dwellers' Knud Bather and the Ninjas' Nick Poppa have been suspended 5 games each for instigating the brawl at today's game at CURIE Inc. Field.
This year Bather has collected a .265 batting average to date with 93 hits in 351 at-bats, 64 RBIs, 17 home runs and scored 52 times. He has played in 91 games.
Poppa has gone 4-13 this season with an ERA of 6.24 and 129 strikeouts in 145.2 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .311 against him.
Witch Hats Win Nail-Biter, 3-2
Extra innings were needed to determine a winner at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium.
The Salem Witch Hats topped the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys by the score of 3-2, with the biggest share of the credit going to center fielder Mike Castillo. Castillo went 5-5 with a double and 4 singles. He scored 2 runs for the Witch Hats on the day. The triumph puts Salem at 51-45 for the season.
Runs were scarce in this one. So, Mike Laughingman's at-bat in the top of the tenth was vitally important. With two out, the Salem catcher drew a walk against reliever Tom Mannequin (0-1), driving in 1 run, to give his team a 3-2 lead.
"Exciting game to play in," said Castillo. "Getting the win makes it even better."
Castillo doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th, and singled in the 10th. This year Castillo is batting .290 with 7 home runs and 36 RBIs.
Despite the loss, the Party Boys clinched at least a wildcard in the Brotherhood League thanks to The Slog dropping a 10-8 decision to Easy Town. Nordhagen Beach needs just one win over Salem this weekend to clinch the BL title for the second straight year.
Silver Shroud Drop 8-0 Decision to Adamantium
The Abernathy Adamantium and starting pitcher Gary Estate stifled the Fort Hagen offense en route to a comfortable 8-0 win at Tato Field. Estate got the win, improving to 3-2. He allowed 9 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings. Estate allowed no runs. With the win, Abernathy pushed its record to 53-43.
The tension was thick in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and Fort Hagen trailing 3-0, Gary Estate had to get a big out. On a 1-1 fastball, he retired Jim Tiller, who grounded out.
