I'd guess influences mechanics is in general the ability to improve the player's performance, without regard to age.

There had been "Handle rookies," "Handle players" and "handle veterans" or something like that. I actually thought that was about getting along with them, but it may have always been about development.

But now "handles development" is the new "handle rookies" I think, more or less, "Handles aging" the new "handle veterans," and "influence mechanics" is the new generalized "handle players."

I don't know that for a fact, but it seems very likely to me.
