Prospects Review Pre-Spring 1936
We arrived in Detroit in mid-May with a farm system that wasn't exactly the envy of the league. We were ranked last in the league in our minor league system with no prospects in the top 100 at the start of spring training. By my arrival in May 1B Bill Moore had cracked the list at #98. We had a total of 2 prospects in the top 200 and just 9 in the top 300. Fast forward about 10 months and our system is looking at lot better.
We now have 7 prospects in the top 100, 16 in the top 200 and 24 in the top 300. In a bigger scope we have 38 in the top 500 which is 19 more than we had back in May 1935. So substantial progress has been made as we have moved up to the #4 overall system in the FABL. While it might be great to now have a system that has some hope in it.
Don't Expect Miracles this Season
That won't translate to overnight success on the field at the big league level. I expect that we will be an unanimous pick to finish dead last in the FA once again. That projection will not make our unhappy owner Eddie Thompson very happy. In my mind we are 3 seasons away from realistically making some noise in the Association. Do I believe we can be improved this year, yeah but it won't be easy. Maybe we will find some help during the spring or right before the start of the year. If I had to peg our win total right now I'd say 50-55. While not great that is significantly better than the 43 we won last season.
