If I bring him up in 1916 and stick him in the rotation should I expect him to ramp up to that 1922 performance level over several years? Be a scrub for several years and then suddenly be great? His ratings are pretty bad right now, but other teams keep asking for him in trades so they must expect something...
I accept the answer might be "go ahead and try it, it totally depends", but if there is a conventional wisdom or known answer I'd love to have it.
Thanks!

This depends upon your settings. If you have development disabled and recalc enabled, then Vance should develop each season along the lines of how he did in real life. And if you are using 3- or 5-year recalc, his performance should be smoothed out, whereas with 1-year recalc, he should be closer to his year-by-year performance.
If, however, you have development enabled, then even with recalc, Vance's ratings & performance should fluctuate some from reality. With a high randomness setting, his development might fluctuate significantly (but he'll be brought back to his current-season level with each year's recalc). And with a low randomness setting, he won't fluctuate as much.
These are all fun settings to experiment with if you're not familiar with them
