Yup, looks like it's all about making sure players acquire some OOTP history, as once that occurs, the player will not appear with his full career stat load. A guy like Grote in the above example is among the free agents when you create 1980. If he stays a free agent all year and doesn't accumulate a stat record, he will have his full career worth of stats when 81 roll around. But, if he gets an at bat be it in the majors or minors during the 1980 season, he will only have OOTP stats and that career mess will not occur. My problem all along was, I usually use reserve rosters, so even if Grote made it onto a roster, he may never get into an actual game. Therefore, no stats, no history. Evidently signing a free agent deal, isn't enough of a history builder. But, being drafted in an inaugural draft is. This game is a like a life long learning quest for the holy grail of knowledge.
