How do numbers get retired
As the title says, what is the criteria for jersey numbers to be retired? I'm looking for the technical info such as a player has to have been with the team for X amount of years for example. Is it a storyline, something else? Maybe can only happen when the player is elected to HOF? What happens if someone on the team already has that number?
