Yes.
That was almost 30 years, two ownership groups, and several management teams ago; just after opening a new (at the time) "state of the art" stadium and drawing over 4m fans per year (50,000 every game) from midway 1989 through the World Series years.
Then they never spent anything worthwhile again until mid-2015, when Alex Anthopolous decided to roll the dice and indulge himself because he knew in his heart he was leaving....with new management on the horizon.
This is a team that literally passed the hat around the locker room in spring training of 2014 (I think) to try to cobble together a deal for (again, I think) Ervin Santana. The Jays asked several players to defer monies to fit it into their payroll structure.
So, in that light, i don't see much funny about my point.
But if drawing on what occurred under the original management group almost 30 years ago gives you a chuckle, I won't rain on your parade.
