Traded players always end up on DFA until you put them on the 40 man roster. Because your 25/40 man rosters may be full. If you don't place them on the roster in the allotted time they become free agents. When you make a trade there will be a pop-up saying which players are in DFA. Players on a minor league contract go directly to a team.
Waivers expose a player to every team in reverse order of standings. Once a term claims a player you can pull him back or let the other team have him. You will get a message once the waiver period has expired. A player must be put on waivers to trade them after the deadline.
Also, A player has to clear waivers to DFA them. DFA ( designated for assignment) Lets you assign a player to the minors and takes them off the 40 man rosters, which players can refuse. Or you can release the player. But his salary still counts against payroll(if or until another team signs him) (I think).
All the above only applies to players on the 40 man roster.
Hope that helps.
