Because they don't owe us anything for our $40 dollars every year other than a fun game for said year, if they choose to take the game in a different direction, that's their prerogative.
Having said that, Markus and company sold the game to some corporation. It's no longer Markus' game. If the game becomes some albatross of microtransactional hell, we should remember who to blame. We can't blame Markus for cashing out of his life's work. We all would have done the same.

I wouldn't blame Markus. Not at all. Like you said, I'd do the same thing.
But i'll do everything to make sure they realize their mistake and put it back in his hands.
I mean nothing malicious about any of this - the new company owes us nothing. Markus did the right thing.
But the new company will play by the existing customer's rules and will continue to cater to us. That's not a request of them, that is a demand. Their entire portfolio of games is at stake.
