World Series Preview

The Brooklyn Dodgers have made it back to their third consecutive World Series, while the Cleveland Indians have dethroned the New York Yankees for the first time in six years. The last time the Yankees did not appear in a World Series was in 1948, when the Indians defeated the Boston Braves.

Brooklyn has activated RF Carl Furillo for the series, a key addition to their lineup, which will have to deal with a cavernous Cleveland Stadium in the first two games. The Dodgers are hopeful that Roy Campanella will return to form in the series.

Attendance for the series is expected to be high this year, as Cleveland fans are giddy over beating the hated Yankees, while Dodger fans are confident they will get their first World Series win now that they do not have to deal with the Yankees.

As the rest of the teams watch the series, they are also starting to look closely at their roster situations, since this will be the first off-season involving total free agency for eligible players. Two of the games transcendent stars - Ted Williams and Stan Musial - are both eligible to test the market this winter. It is unclear if either might sign a contract extension during the series or if they will file for free agency later this fall.

Teams are also starting to plan out their scouting work for the upcoming amateur draft, which is set for December. A list of players eligible for that draft will be released next week, when Commissioner Ford Frick is expected to provide updates on expansion, relocation and ballpark concerns.
