1935 Spring training

Spring training is only one week long that few battles are going on at the Eagles training camp.

Catcher
Ramsey acquired from trade on draft day should be getting the starting spot but everything is open for the backup position between Goldenberg, Pickham and Richardson. Prospect Richardson has a strong first week but one thing is guarantee so far, at least one of the two veterans will be going to AAA.

First Base
Hal Shumate is given the opportunity to show his potentail and had a very good first week. With second year Babe Walsh as backup, that maybe sound like a demotion to come for veteran Bert Barth if the two youngster continue this way to training camp

Second Base
Andy Carter is strongly in place for second base, but propsect Jack Ray is given some innings and expected to get the starting role in AAA this season. But in the first week he maintained .400 avg and good defense play to raise question marks... can he force a move of Carter toward shortstop and keep his spot on the roster?

Shortstop
Battle is wide open at this position between Piper, Carson and prospect Beard. Beard was kept in the organisation instead of Page, traded on draft day. Beard did not have a good first week, but still more game time before opening day. Carson had the best batting stats on the first week, but everybody know his trouble in defense. Piper would normally stay as backup.

Third base
The secret is known by everybody in town, were Mel Carroll should get the starting job at 3rd base. Only reason why he would not get it will be injury or very bad training camp. Bullock and Creasy are in training camp to train only, Bullock may get a shot as backup as he can also play shortstop in defense, but he will competing with Piper for this position of backup infielder.

Outfield:
The three starter positions should be filled by the trio of LF Vestal, CF Flowers and RF Brown.
The battle there is at backup position between McCann, Fero and the two rookies Bradley and Sweeney. So far Bradley and Fero had the best first week of the camp and would be ahead if season starts tomorrow.

Let's give another week before going to the pitcher training roster,
The question now is : How many rookie will be on the opening roster for the Washington Eagles in 1935? it could be up to 7 if we had 2 or 3 from the pitching squadron.
