Walkers news: March 12 -- St. Louis sends Rossi to Cincinnati for utility player Chang
The St. Louis River Walkers have made a trade with the Cincinnati, sending outfielder Steve Rossi and minor league third baseman Jordan Salinas in exchange for first baseman/outfielder Jae-Hong Chang.
The trade isn't much of a surprise.
While Rossi had a very good season-plus with St. Louis since being acquired from Kansas City, the Walkers lineup was very weighted to the left-handed hitting side.
With All-Stars, Jose Ramirez in left field and Jose Segura in center, it made the most sense to try and find some balance by trading Rossi.
Especially, after the Walkers were able to acquire right-handed hitting right fielder Alex Greene from Peoria in the off-season.
In 2031, Rossi, 29, hit .288 with 32 homers and 94 RBIs in 151 games (145 starts) for the Walkers.
In his full-season plus in St. Louis, Rossi hit .302 with 55 homers and 151 RBIs in 248 total games.
Chang is a bit of an unknown quantity.
He spent just one season with Cincinnati in 2031, getting into 156 games during which he batted .214 with 21 homers and 65 RBIs.
For his career, in the majors, he has hit .219 with 25 homers and 75 RBIs.
However, he is considered a well-above average defender at first base -- giving the Walkers an option to the left-handed hitting Rick Scott -- and also is considered a plus-defender in the corner outfield positions.
The other player involved in the deal, Salinas, is a minor league signing who has yet to play above rookie league.
