We made a couple of changes to start the new month. C Don Kern (28-R) and CF Gary McKellar (35-R) were sent to Daytona Beach (A). I did not expect Kern to hit a lot, but I thought he would be passable with his good defense and drawing some walks. But his defense has not been all that great this year and his hitting is nonexistent. He was kept out of Spring Training over Bert Swope (33-S), because Swope has never hit lefties a lick and we need a platoon partner with Bob Hutson who can hit lefties. Well, Swope is hitting lefties for Daytona Beach. Actually, he is hitting everybody. .338/.420/.409 in 154 AB with 0 HR and 19 RBI. He's 11 for 23 (.478) against lefties, so we will give him one more shot to hit lefties up here. He cannot hit much worse than Kern has... McKellar is going down just because we are not using him much; he has done fine when we have called on him. But we need to make room for RF Tommy Adams (23-L). He's hitting .326/.401/.454 in 337 AB with 5 HR and 19 SB for the Admirals. He does not have the power that Fernando Tello has, but he plays better defense and will get on base more (hopefully). It will also allow us to move Cal Doty back to the #3 hole against righties. And Adams should not ground into all the double plays that Tello has....

We are in Birmingham to play the Barons a 3 game series. They split 4 games at home with Columbus over the weekend. We are 3-4 against them on the season and split 4 games with them in our first visit, April 21-24. They lead the MLB in scoring with 4.63 runs per game (Jacksonville is #7 with 4.13). The Barons are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.06 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.51). Their starters are doing well with a 3.45 ERA, 4th best in the MLB, but their Bullpen is at 4.03, 13th best. Our starters are at 3.53, 8th best, and our Bullpen is at 2.60, 3rd best. Their run differential is +59, 5th in the MLB, and ours is +65, 3rd best. Ottawa is 1st at +125 and then there are 4 teams bunched at +59 to +67.

Jacksonville Jays (63-42 .600 2 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Birmingham Barons (58-46 .558 4.5 GB in 3rd place in the Southern Division)

BIRM: Juan Estrada (31-L) (7-9 2.41 ERA 164 IP, 138 H, 8 HR, 40 BB, 103 SO) All-Star

Calice gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 2 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a win over Charlotte, his 3rd win in a row.

Estrada is their #1 starter. He is 1-1 in 2 starts against the Jays this season with a 3 hit shutout. 1.20 ERA, 15 IP, 10 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 13 SO. He is 5th in the MLB in ERA pitching for the team with the most runs scored in the League, but he has a losing record.

Top of the First
Tony Weninger grounds out to 3rd. Cal Doty grounds out to 2nd. T.R. Hunter bloops a hit to right! Ray McDonald swings at the first pitch and pops out to 1st...

Bottom of the First

Stan Stephens grounds one to 3rd, but Roger Davis throws it away for a 2 base error.... I cannot wait for Charlie Faber to come back! Benny Dreher swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd and Stephens goes to 3rd. Wilson Partida pops out to right and Stephens holds! Sergio Acevedo pops out to center!

It starts to rain in the top of the 4th... With 2 outs, it gets heavy and the umps stop play for an hour and 4 minutes....

Bottom of the Fourth
Has the hour layoff put P Al Calice out of sorts? He says he is good to go, but Wilson Partida launches his 1st pitch over the left field wall for a home run... 1 to 0, Barons. The next three make outs, though!

Top of the Seventh
Turner Morache (26-R) is into play 3rd and Stan Stephens moves to left, because Benny Dreher hurt himself beating out an infield hit last inning. Tom McDowell grounds a hit to left. Dickie Stemen grounds one to 1st, but Wilson Partida boots it! Roger Davis swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and McDowell goes to 3rd.... How long until Charlie Faber is back, Trudy? You say 3 days now, but in a day or two, you will change it to 'who knows?'.... Bert Swope grounds one to 2nd, but Rick Halverson boots it and McDowell scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1!

Top of the Eighth

Tony Weninger grounds the first pitch to right for a hit! Cal Doty bounces one back to the box, but P Juan Estrada makes a bad toss to 1st for an error! With 1 out, Ray McDonald draws a walk to load the bases up! Tom McDowell lines a hit to right center and Weninger scores and Doty heads home, but Bob Marks throws him out... 2 to 1, Jays!

Bottom of the Ninth
New Pitcher: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (34-L). 3-4-5 up for the Barons.... Wilson Partida lines out hard to center! Sergio Acevedo strikes out! Ken Kelly flies out to left and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!

Won - 2 to 1

We had 8 hits (all singles) and made 1 error
Birmingham had 6 hits and made 5 errors

The 5 errors ties the record for a Jay opponent.
It had been done 3 times before.
The most we have ever made is 4, which we did twice (2001,03)

Al Calice (W 10-7) went 8 innings, allowed 1 run, 6 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 4.
LHP Bill Grant (SV 26) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout.

Juan Estrada (L 7-10) lowers his 5th best ERA, but takes another loss. He went 8 innings, gave us 2 unearned runs, 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

SS T.R. Hunter had 2 hits. 1B Tom McDowell had 2 hits, scored a run and had our only RBI. C Bert Swope, in his season debut, had a hit against a tough lefty, but got caught trying to steal 2nd.

For Birmingham, 1B Wilson Partida hit his 11th home run of the season.

The Barons announced that LF Benny Dreher fractured his ankle and is out for the rest of the season.
