Try quitting and signing with a different club. If your current GM is being hosed on every trade, you should be able to find a more skillful boss. If GM's lose their trading acumen as soon as they hire you, perhaps there's a bug. I doubt that more than a tiny fraction of OOTP players choose manager-only mode, so the developers may get little feedback about how well or poorly that option works.
