I've watched a number of 2D games in a standard, current NHL save and have noticed two things. First, the number of shots on goal per game seems very realistic. The number of face-offs (and therefore play stoppages), however, is quite a bit below what is realistic. There should be around 50-60 face-offs per game, but I've seen about 60% of that number. I suppose this means there aren't enough occurrences of things like puck out of play, icing, offside, and goalie holding the puck.
