4 GB will work, but not that well; the issue isn't the 2D, but rather the amount of memory used by all the data the game works with. With only 4 GB, you're going to get a lot of disk access and it'll be quite slow. And (although we've improved this somewhat in FHM7) you'll run into stability issues after several years of a game, as its size grows to a level that's more than your available RAM can handle.
