Catcher Ability Paired With Certain Pitchers?
I was wondering if there might be any particular kind of pitchers that benefit more from catchers with good catcher ability. I haven't tested anything, but I would guess that the catcher ability can help with getting some close pitches called as strikes more often. If that's true, is there a kind of pitcher could benefit the most from this?
I thought perhaps high Stuff pitchers can benefit since an extra strike could make them a lot more likely to get a K (not to mention it makes them 1 ball further away from giving up a walk), compared to a contact pitcher that maybe doesn't get far into the count before a ball is put in play. Though maybe it is still proportional in benefit, since the high K guy was already going to strike out many batters, so the good catcher may add a few more, while the low K guy was already going to strike out few, so the catcher helps add a few, so it's a wash.
So then I thought maybe high control pitchers could benefit more, because their pitches tend to be close to the strike zone, and so the catcher has more chances to influence the strike/ball call. Low control guys seem to pitch rather wildly, from way outside the zone for 1 pitch, to right down the middle on the next, so the catcher would be no help in framing these kinds of pitches.
Any thoughts? Maybe someone who does pitch by pitch has noticed some trends?
