The Hartford Whalers are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games at home to Providence and have lost 6 in a row and 9 of their last ten. We were 6-2 against them last year when they finished 55-107 in last place in the North. We have won more games against them than any other team in the North in our history. And I just realized that the Jacksonville Jays hold the MLB records for most wins in a season and the most losses! The Whalers are 13th in scoring with 3.36 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.70). They are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.84 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 2.63). Their run differential is -12, tied for 10th in the MLB, and ours is +29, still #2.

Hartford Whalers (11-14 .440 6 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (16-11 .593 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Jim Baucom (23-L) (5-0 1.26 ERA 50 IP, 35 H, 2 HR, 6 BB, 43 SO) Ace/Hurler/All-Star(3: 02-04)

Lockamy announced today that this would be his final season. He was 6-13 with a 4.47 ERA in 175 IP last year and 0-5 with a 5.79 ERA in 8 starts in 2003. He is 0-1 in 2 starts against the Jays in his career with a 4.70 ERA. 7.2 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 7 BB, 4 SO.

Bottom of the First
Jack Washburn flies out to deep right. Danny Rosas pops out to left. Fernando Tello draws a walk. Ray McDonald grounds a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit and Tello goes to 3rd. P Dennis Lockamy is hurt. New Pitcher: Erik Salyer (28-R), who is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 20 IP. Tom McDowell grounds out to short....

Top of the Third
With 2 outs, Roy Zimdahl knocks the first pitch over the wall in left for a home run... 3 to 0, Whalers.

Top of the Fifth
With 2 outs, Ray Dallas doubles to left. Roy Zimdahl bloops a hit to right and Dallas scores.... 4 to 0, Whalers.

Bottom of the Fifth
With 1 out, Bart Daw draws a walk. Bob Hutson doubles to left center and Daw scores from 1st! 4 to 1, Whalers. PH Mike Volkman (37-L) grounds a hit to right and Hutson scores! 4 to 2, Whalers. Jack Washburn grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Danny Rosas walks on 4 pitches. Fernando Tello grounds out to 1st, 3-1.....

Bottom of the Sixth
New Pitcher: Marty Beck (27-R), who is 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA in 4.2 IP with 10 H allowed. He was 1-4 with 1 SV and a 3.45 ERA in 47 IP last year. Ray McDonald lines a hit to left. And gets caught stealing for the second time today...... Tom McDowell lines a 3-2 pitch to center for a hit. T.R. Hunter grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. PH Cal Doty (28-L), who will stay in the game to play center, swings at a 3-0 pitch and hits a home run to right center!! Tie Game: 4 to 4! No loss for P Jim Baucom!

The Whalers load the bases up with 2 outs against P Albert Davies (28-L) in the top of the 7th, but Roberto Lopez grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Ninth
On the Hill: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (34-L), after a perfect 8th. 9-1-2 up for the Whalers. 1B Charlie Mackey (30-R), batting .230 with 4 HR and 8 RBI in 74 AB, grounds out to 2nd. Mike Fox grounds out to 1st, unassisted. PH Vinny Puga (28-R), who the Whalers got in a trade with Indianapolis this Winter and is batting .198 with 1 HR and 6 RBI in 86 AB with 10 BB, grounds out to 3rd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Ninth
On the Hill: Alex Rosales (32-L), a supposed meatball pitcher (5.86 ERA in 81.1 IP last year), who is pitching with abdominal soreness which supposedly affects his throwing motion. Apparently, it has affected his motion for the better, because he has pitched 2 perfect innings so far today..... 8-9-1 up for us. Bob Hutson is allowed to hit, because I am an idiot, and he swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted. 2B Charlie Faber (34-R) swings at the first pitch and flies out to center. Jack Washburn flies out to left.... 3 perfect innings from an injured meatball......

Extras!
For the third time this season.
We are 2-0 so far.

Top of the Tenth
3-4-5 up for the Whalers. With 2 outs, PH Kim Scarbrough (38-R), 0 for 6 on the season, but a career .322 hitter, grounds a hit to left. Chris Leppla strikes out!

Bottom of the Tenth

New Pitcher; Lee Titus (32-R), who is 0-0 with a 4.30 ERA in 14.2 IP. He had a 3.79 ERA in 57 IP last year. Danny Rosas draws a walk. He steals 2nd! A wild pitch sends him to 3rd! PH Dave Estey (23-L) takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. He steals 2nd..... That is the most useless steal in history.... So what if they turn a double play; we'll still score a run... The only thing that steal accomplished is to take the bat out of our best hitter's hands.... Manny strikes again! They walk Ray McDonald intentionally to load the bases up with no outs. Tom McDowell lines a hit to left center and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!
