C Garrett Bender (30-R) was sent back to Daytona (A) and C Jim Hess (33-R) was recalled. Hess was only 2 for 23 for the Tortugas, but with a double and a home run. He is a much better defender than Bender now. He only has an average arm, but is excellent in all other areas of catching. Bender only has average arm and is below average in all other areas of catching now, when he used to be Gold Glove caliber....
Jacksonville Jays (9-7 .563 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Southern Division) at

Bottom of the First

Bottom of the Second
Pete Thompson and Russ Baker lead off with back to back hits off 0-2 pitches and the Juice have runners at the corners with no outs... What the heck is up with P Del Warwick? Roger Falbo swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Thompson scores. 2 to 1, Juice.
Top of the Fourth
Ray McDonald swings at the first pitch and beats out an infield hit. With 1 out, Jack Washburn pokes a hit over the 2nd baseman and McDonald goes to 3rd. Washburn steals 2nd! Bert Swope flies out to deep center and McDonald tags up, but gets thrown out at home by Pete Thompson....
Bottom of the Fifth
With 2 outs, Tom Howard swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. Ricky Perez hits his 2nd triple of the game, tying the MLB record, to left center and Howard scores... 3 to 1, Juice.
Top of the Sixth
Fernando Tello doubles to left center! Ray McDonald lines a hit to center. Tom McDowell grounds out to 3rd and McDonald goes to 2nd, but Tello stays put at 3rd. Jack Washburn strikes out looking.... Bert Swope strikes out looking on 3 pitches...

Top of the Ninth
7-8-9 up for us. Leander Gooding strikes out looking on 3 pitches... Charlie Faber swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted. PH Danny Stewart (33-L) strikes out...
Bottom of the Ninth
New Pitcher: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (33-L). 8-9-1 up for the Juice. PH Ted Mason (26-R), who was 1 for 4 with a triple and an RBI yesterday, grounds out to 1st, 3-1. PH Joe Jones (28-R), who was 0 for 3 yesterday, strikes out! Ernie Patterson swings at the first pitch and lines out to center!
Extras!
Top of the Tenth
New Pitcher: Daniel Escarcega (33-R), who is 0-0 with a 1.08 ERA in 8.1 IP. He was 1-4 with 3 SV and a 7.02 ERA in 41 IP with 11 HR allowed last year, but was decent in 2001 and 2002. Top of our order up. With 1 out, Fernando Tello takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. But our #3 and #4 hitters both fly out....
Bottom of the Tenth
2-3-4 up for Orlando. With 2 outs, Herman Chance takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Mike Day lines out to right!
Top of the Eleventh

Bottom of the Eleventh
PH Mike Glantz (32-R), in his season debut, lines a hit to left... He is a career .206 hitter in A Ball.... With 1 out, Glantz steals 2nd... Top of the Twelfth
New Pitcher: Karl Steffl (25-R), a rookie who is 2-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 12.2 IP. He was a 5th round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft and led the Southern League in Saves last year with 33. Charlie Faber grounds a hit up the middle! PH Dave Thompson (28-R) bunts Faber to 2nd... Crap! I forgot again and wasted my best hitter on the bench to bunt....... Cal Doty is walked intentionally. Fernando Tello flies out to deep right and Faber tags up and moves to 3rd. Now, if Doty steals, I will be ticked, because that will take the bat out of the hands of our best hitter.... There he goes..... Dolt.... He is safe... But they do NOT walk Ray McDonald! But he grounds out to 2nd...
Bottom of the Twelfth

Cal Doty swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd...
Bottom of the Thirteenth
CF Mike Glantz grounds one to 3rd, but Tom McDowell makes a bad throw for an error.... RF Russ Baker lines out to short. PH Barry Magee (31-L), batting .275 with 2 HR and 3 RBI in 51 AB, lines a double to left, but Glantz stops at 3rd. Joe Jones strikes out! Ernie Patterson grounds out to 3rd and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!
Won - 5 to 3
We had 14 hits and made 2 errors
Orlando had 13 hits and made no errors
Del Warwick went 5.2 innings, allowed 3 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 4. Not so great, but his best this season... His BABIP went up from .397 to .398... If I told you I had a pitcher who was walking 1.6 per 9 innings without allowing any home runs, you'd think he was having a pretty good year, wouldn't you? Instead, he is winless with a 5.32 ERA...
RHP Robbie Hopley faced 1 batter and got him out.
RHP Roger Wallace went 1 scoreless inning and allowed 2 hits.
LHP Albert Davies pitched 1 perfect inning.
LHP Bill Grant went 3 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 2.
