I started a new team 4 weeks ago, and in the first 3 weeks it made close to 500k pp without me spending a dime on extra PP just by following it.
You can also use some of that PP to get a bronze or iron level tournament team together. You can enter up to 3 tournaments at a time and win card packs or PP which you can use to improve your main team.
