Week 13
The Pirates are still in second place in the central division, with a record of 43-33, they are five games back of the Cubs. The Pirates start the week off, playing host to a three game series against the Cardinals, who are 40-35 and whom the Pirates are 3-4 against this season. The Cards starting rotation is anchored by Jason Simontacchi (8-6 3.71) and also contains Jimmy Journell (4-6 3.74), Tyler Johnson (0-4 4.13), and Dan Haren (8-3 4.51). The big three of Pujols (0.313 18 45), Jim Edmonds (0.293 8 40), and Miguel Tejada (0.272 10 41) still lead the powerhouse offense, and for some reason Scott Rolen is still leading off the order, despite hitting just 0.235 with 12 HRs and 34 RBIs.
Game 77: Pirates 3 Cardinals 9
Benson didn't have his greatest game, giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings. The bullpen got destroyed, giving up five more runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Jimmy Journell pitched fairly well, giving up just three runs in 8 1/3 innings. Jim Edmonds smashed two homers in the game, a three run shot off Benson in the third, and a two run shot off Vogelsong in the 7th.
Game 78: Pirates 6 Cardinals 5 Glove Day at PNC Park
Greinke did much better in this start, giving up four runs in 6 1/3 innings, but still did not pick up the win. Simontacchi got the loss, giving up six runs, just two of which were earned, in seven innings of work. The Pirates were down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Navarette led off with a single, and then Castillo reached base on an error. Doumit then came through with a double to score the first run of the game for the Bucs. After McDougall struck out, Kotsay came through with a single scoring Castillo and Doumit to bring the game to 4-3. After Craig Wilson struck out swinging, Nady walked, and then JJ Davis came through with a three run homerun to give the Pirates a 6-4 lead. Mann gave up one run in the ninth, but with the bases loaded and two outs, he got Vina to fly out to left field to end the game and earn him his 18th save of the season. Shields picked up the win for the Bucs, and while Greinke didn't have a great game, he did well enough to deserve at least one more start.
Game 79: Pirates 9 Cardinals 11
JVB had a really tough start, giving up 7 runs in just 1 2/3 innings for the loss. Johnson picked up his first win of the season, giving up just two runs in 6 innings. The Pirates mounted a huge comeback try in the ninth inning, scoring seven runs off of relievers Kline and Crudale, but Izzy came in with the bases loaded and two outs, and after giving up a single to Bobby Hill, he got Xavier Nady to ground out to end the threat and earn himself his 14th save of the season.
Series Recap: Not a very good series for the Bucs, but luckily the Cubs had a worse series, getting swept and the Bucs managed to pick up a game on the Cubs.
The Pirates now travel to Detroit for a three game series against the Tigers, who they went 2-1 against last week.
Game 80: Pirates 11 Tigers 1
Williams continues to have a great season, as he picked up his 10th win of the season today, giving up just one run through 8 2/3 innings. Roney on the other hand, isn't doing too well, as he picked up his 10th loss of the season, giving up 7 runs, six of them earned, in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Game 81: Pirates 5 Tigers 3
Ponson tied Atlanta's Wainwright for the NL leading 12th win of the season, giving up just 3 runs in eight innings of work. Lackey gave up four runs in 6 2/3 innings of work and got the loss for the Tigers. Mann pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, throwing just five pitches for his 19th save of the season.
Game 82: Pirates 3 Tigers 2
Benson made up for last game, giving up just one run in seven innings to pick up his 10th win of the season. Bell pitched well for the Tigers, giving up just three runs in eight innings, but still got the loss. Despite giving up one run, Mann pitched 1 2/3 innings for his 20th save of the season. Doumit and Henson each hit solo homeruns for the Bucs.
Series Recap: A sweep of the Tigers is definitely nice, but unfortunately the Cubs also swept the Giants so the Bucs remain 4 back of the Cubs. The Pirates finished their interleague play with a 12-6 record against the AL.
Around the league, on Monday San Diego's first baseman Ryan Klesko ruptured an achilles tendon while running the bases and will miss the rest of the season. On Tuesday, Montreal's Chad Vargas suffered a torn back muscle, and will also miss the remainder of the season.
