What about airplane mode (usually one of the Function keys)? Shut off the internet while you are simulating. Just one thing; make sure that the computer isn't already planning to do a just-downloaded update - check the Windows Update status. If nothing is doing, disable the internet for the duration. (Just remember to put it back on. Don't worry; Windows will not forget your update, believe me.)
