The View from the BMU

The View from the BMU

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

3 May 2298 – Natick Banks

On certain Tuesdays for the 2297 and 2298 seasons, we will feature one of the settlements where teams in the Boston Minor Union play.

In our eighth trip around the BMU, we will go to the west shore of Lake Cochituate, Natick Banks.

The Lakeside Horror

From a terminal previous to Nate's first exploration of the area: "Natick Banks is a small town that sits along the western edge of Lake Cochituate. The larger part of the town is occupied by super mutants. The northern part, closer to the Roadside Pines motel, is occupied by raiders. Additionally, a deathclaw may appear in the town's center. The eastern part of the town, including the Natick Police Department, has sunken into the lake.

"There is a Red Rocket gas station in the southern part of the town, next to a small house holding terminal entries written by Kim Wu, a pre-War Chinese-American child hiding with her family from being sent to internment camps. A bed can be found in the same room as the terminal. The town's church and graveyard may hold some feral ghouls.

"To the west of the town is a shipping warehouse with a sprawling trailer yard. Further up the hill, a large electrical substation. There is a large concentration of deathclaws in the area (up to nine) as well as a super mutant behemoth (usually found roaming around the substation) near the western map boundary, often fighting one or more of the deathclaws. Depending on transpired events, Natick Banks is one of the places where the Brotherhood will patrol with a vertibird and knights.

The BMU in 2297 to 2298

In 2297, Natick Banks had two of the BMU's 24 teams since the Somerville Place Sentry Bots (known as the Poseidon Reservoir Sentry Bots) also played on the outskirts of the town due to travel problems. This season, the team that played on the 'B' field, which has since been torn down, is now firmly planted in Somerville Place since vehicles can help transport teams to and from areas around the Charles River and to the outskirts of Downtown Boston. Unfortunately, vehicles cannot currently travel in Downtown Boston due to remaining debris.

Last season, the affiliate of Diamond City, the Natick Banks Big Leaguers were not the only game in the settlement, so they shared with the Sentry Bots the BMU's lowest attendance numbers. Attendance is not great anyway in the BMU, but now the Big Leaguers have no competition, helping them be one of the more popular games in town. With a 10-4 start to the 2298 season and at first a fast start to the CBO's Swatters, the buzz for the pointing baseballers was growing.

A Growth in Peace

Without a doubt, with the removal of raiders, super mutants, and deathclaws, the small settlement is a peaceful, laid back area that has become a favorite vacation spot of Downtowners looking for some peace and quiet. With its two locations for rest, the NB Hotel and the Roadside Pines Motel, Natick Banks is a place where people know they can go for an affordable amount of caps.

The downtown area has been built up, despite the problem with the lakeside. Now, Brotherhood patrols make sure nothing creeps up from the Glowing Sea to the south and west or from the lake.
