Today is Bill Grant's 33rd and Dale Gilchrist's 25th birthdays!

We are in Orlando to play our in state rivals a 3 game series. The Juice were swept in 3 games at Birmingham over the weekend and were swept in 4 games by Syracuse before that. They were the hottest team in the League in July. We are 3-4 against them on the season and this is our first visit to the Magic Kingdom. They are 3rd in scoring with 4.40 runs per game and are only 4 runs behind Birmingham, the current leader (Jacksonville is #6 with 4.06). They are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.38 per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.98). Their run differential is +2 and ours is +10, tied for 7th best!

Jacksonville Jays (63-60 .512 6 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) at
Orlando Juice (61-63 .492 8.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Jim Baucom (22-L) (13-5 1.84 ERA 195.1 IP, 158 H, 5 HR, 37 BB, 155 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03) vs.
ORL: Manny Martinez (31-R) (7-8 3.13 ERA 132.1 IP, 123 H, 8 HR, 31 BB, 104 SO)

Baucom pitched a 7 hit shutout with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts last time out. He threw 122 pitches, so we would love to have him take it much easier today.

Martinez, the ex-Jay, has made 2 starts against us this season and only allowed 1 run, but only pitched 4 innings, because he got hurt in both games. He is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA. 4 IP, 3 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 1 SO.

Top of the First:

Bottom of the First:
Ernie Patterson grounds out to 3rd. Tom Howard, batting .407 against the Jays this season, grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Ricky Perez strikes out! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:
With 1 out, Jack Washburn triples to left center! Ed Diskin draws a walk. Bart Daw grounds into a 6-4-3 double play....

Through 5 innings, each team only has 1 hit.

After 6 innings, we pull Jim Baucom because he is over 100 pitches....

Bottom of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Robbie Hopley (29-R). With 1 out, Pete Thompson doubles to left and steals 3rd... P Manny Martinez strikes out. Ernie Patterson swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses!

Top of the Ninth:

Still no score in this game! P Manny Martinez is at 108 pitches. 9-1-2 up for us. PH Cal Doty (26-L) grounds out to short. Danny Stewart grounds out to 2nd. Dennis Brown pops out to short...

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (33-L). 5-6-7 up for the Juice. Gil Weaver lines one hard to left, but Ray McDonald makes a diving catch! Mike Day strikes out looking! Roger Falbo grounds out to short!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
3-4-5 up for us. With 1 out, Marty Eades lines a hit to center. Jack Washburn lines a hit to left. Junior Danielson lines a hit to center and the bases are loaded with 1 out. Bart Daw grounds into a force at home, 6-2... That does it for P Manny Martinez. New Pitcher: Ray Hayes (28-R), their closer, who is 4-8 with 18 SV and a 3.54 ERA in 96.2 IP with 14 HR allowed. C Bert Swope (31-S) draws a walk to force in a run! 1 to 0, Jays! We let P Bill Grant bat, because 1) we do not trust the rested relievers we have and 2) only Charlie Faber and Gary McKellar are on the bench and the better one is hitting .165 against right-handers... Grant pops out to center.

Bottom of the Tenth:
The last two players on the bench enter the game: Charlie Faber at 3rd and Gary McKellar in center. Danny Stewart moves to left and Ray McDonald moves to right. PH Jim Wilt (28-R), batting .219 with 1 HR and 5 RBI in 73 AB, fouls out to the catcher. PH Joe Jones (27-R), batting .193 with 1 HR and 9 RBI in 109 AB, grounds out to 2nd. Ernie Patterson grounds out to short and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!
