Trends in Pro Sports and Revenue
Baseball - Is or has hit the point where fans and merchandising is important again . TV will not pay the bills for many teams except large markets . This 2020 season will cause issues for owners and teams , they will need time to get fans back.
Basketball - I don't think they worry clauses in contracts must be met .. TV revenue is shared .. and the money from sponsorships and overseas ... means they can ignore the fans more.
Football - Is all about the LONG term TV money . Revenue is shared . and there is an OUT to most every contract . The fans are just an after thought. The owners will not make as much profit ... the player contracts (unless you are the gate attraction) will allow players to move on.
Baseball used the Designated Hitter to keep fading stars in the game -- today the DH is hitter ......
Basketball simple allows ageing stars to continue by having a different set of rules for them ( how many carries do we see -- how many times do the star player simply come down and dislodge the defensive player from his position - how many times does the star player not even dribble the ball to bring it down the court ( see LeBron James)
Football -- simply change the rules for safety and make it touch --- or FLAG.
It is late at night -- I will read this tomorrow
