October 9-10, 2024: Wild Card Games & Rays Playoff Info

Well, we know who the opponent will be in the ALDS and it's a rematch of last season:

Yairo Munoz's 3-run HR in the first turned out to be enough for Seattle to book a spot in the ALDS once again. The Orioles had numerous chances against Marco Gonzales but either didn't get the key hit when they needed it (Renato Nunez whiffed with one out and the bases load) or made baserunning mistakes (one Oriole was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, another was thrown out trying to steal 3rd and another was picked off first).

I set the playoff roster and there really weren't any big surprises. Left off was Mitchell Verburg as well as Dustin May. It's a shame about May but missing the second half of the season was the big strike against him and he wasn't going to start anyway. As for long relief I have McClanahan and Lacy. I briefly gave some thought to going with Greg Jones (who impressed me quite a bit in September) over Triston Casas but if something happened to Devers he's the only 3B on the roster. Plus I already have Hiura to fill in for either Wander or Brujan if necessary. The other thing I decided was to go with Spencer Torkelson in the lineup at DH vs RHP instead of Seth Beer, and use him against LHP in lieu of Nick Schnell. Ride or die with Tork I say. Meanwhile the rotation will be Buehler, Glasnow, Manning and Lynch. I want to use Buehler and Glasnow at the Trop since they're more homer-prone than Manning. That would have been a bigger deal had Baltimore won and Games 3 & 4 were in Camden Yards, so it might not make as much of a difference now with Seattle. Plus if for no other reason I'd like to have Manning be my game 3 starter if we find ourselves down 0-2 like last year.

The NL Wild Card Game:

Brusdar Graterol was grate, er great, pitching 8 3-hit shutout innings to lead the Dodgers over the Braves. Wilmer Flores (the Dodgers' 1B after Josh Bell went down for the season) had a 2-RBI single off Mike Soroka to provide the game's only runs. Soroka was excellent otherwise, getting 10 strikeouts, but it wasn't enough as the Dodgers will now play the Mets in the NLDS.
