RP Jim Kenzy (34-R) was activated from the DL and RP Justin Reddick (29-R) was sent back to Daytona (A).

We are back home for 2 whole days to play Birmingham. They just split a pair of games in New Orleans. We are 3-1 against them on the season and this is their first trip to Jacksonville. They have run into a team hitting slump and are 14th in scoring with 3.56 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.92). They are last in BA at .237. We are 11th at .252. The Barons are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.70 per game (Jacksonville is #5 with 3.76). We have allowed 2 more runs than they have, but they have played 1 more game. Their run differential is -11, 86 runs better than Louisville, who is a game ahead of them in the standings. Ours is now +11.

Birmingham Barons (32-45 .416 12 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (37-39 .487 6.5 GB tied for 4th place in the Southern Division)

BIRM: Cesar Rodriguez (28-R) (3-5 2.42 ERA 89.1 IP, 75 H, 6 HR, 35 BB, 60 SO) All-Star vs.
JAX: Jim Baucom (20-L) (5-6 2.56 ERA 119.1 IP, 100 H, 8 HR, 30 BB, 72 SO) Rookie

Rodriguez was 15-8 with a 2.62 ERA in 209.1 IP last year. He tied for the League lead in shutouts with 6. We only faced him once, but he shut us out on 6 hits with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. We have no faced him this season.

Baucom is 0-2 in his last 3 starts. He allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, 2 home runs and no walks with 1 strikeout in 8 innings last time out in a loss.

Top of the First:
Stan Stephens flies out to center. Benny Dreher strikes out! Sergio Acevedo strikes out! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Danny Stewart grounds out to short. Leander Gooding lines a hit to left. He gets caught stealing... Cal Doty grounds out to short...

The Barons go 9 up, 9 down!

Top of the Fourth:
With 2 outs, Sergio Acevedo, who is apparently not hitting at all against anyone but us, swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to left... 1 to 0, Barons.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Leander Gooding swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right. Cal Doty lines out to 1st and they double Gooding off base... Marty Eades swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to left. Mike Volkman grounds a hit to right. Bert Swope swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to left and Eades beats the throw home! Tie Game: 1 to 1! Jack Washburn hits a home run to right!!! 4 to 1, Jays!

Top of the Fifth:

You just got a 3 run lead, so what is the one thing you do not want to do as a pitcher? Walk the leadoff man, which P Jim Baucom does in the person of Gerald Young... Ken Kelly grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. With 2 outs, P Cesar Rodriguez lines a hit to right and Kelly beats the throw to 3rd... Stan Stephens lines a hit to right center and Kelly scores... 4 to 2, Jays. Benny Dreher clears the bases with a double to center... Tie Game: 4 to 4.

Top of the Eighth:
Stan Stephens takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... The Bullpen gets up. Benny Dreher bunts Stephens to 2nd. Stephens steals 3rd... Sergio Acevedo grounds out to the pitcher and the runner holds. We walk Al Chase intentionally. Dave Jay grounds out to short!

Bottom of the Eighth:

On the Hill: Jeff Shearin (39-R), their closer, after a perfect 7th. Leander Gooding takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Cal Doty grounds a hit up the middle. But the next three make outs...

Top of the Ninth:
P Jim Baucom is at 104 pitches. 6-7-8 up for the Barons and the Bullpen is primed. Gerald Young strikes out! Ken Kelly swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! PH Jim Montgomery (31-R), their normal 1st baseman, who hit 32 HR last year, but is hitting .208 with 7 HR and 29 RBI in 231 AB this year, pops out to 1st!

Bottom of the Ninth:
7-8-9 up for us. Jack Washburn takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. PH Glen Lewis (21-L) strikes out... PH Brian Porter (34-S) is sent up. Washburn tries to steal, but they have a pitchout on and he is out... Porter strikes out looking....

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Bill Grant (31-L). Glen Lewis stays in the game to play right and Charlie Faber (31-R) is in to play short. The Barons go down in order!

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Arvel Ivey (33-L), with a 4.01 ERA in 42.2 IP, but decent looking stats. He had a 3.10 ERA last year. He has never allowed a home run in the MLB in 95 IP. Top of the order up for us. With 1 out, Leander Gooding lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit. With 2 outs, he gets caught stealing.... We are 0 for 3 stealing today...

Top of the Eleventh:
3-4-5 up for them. Sergio Acevedo takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Al Chase doubles to left and Acevedo scores... 5 to 4, Barons. The Bullpen is up. With 1 out, we walk Gerald Young intentionally to face their best hitter, Ken Kelly... Grant balks the runners up.... So we walk Kelly intentionally...
