CF Danny Stewart (31-L) has been cleared to play by Trudy the Trainer, so he was activated from the DL and LF Barry Laskowski (35-R) was sent back to Daytona (A). It should not be long before Stewart is back on the DL, though... Another week yet until we get 3B Marty Eades back. He was our best hitter before he got hurt. The way 3B Brian Porter has filled in, though, we hardly miss him!

Jacksonville Jays (22-30 .423 11 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at
Providence Steamrollers (28-24 .538 2 GB in 3rd place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Marco Gonzalez (27-R) (0-2 6.57 ERA 12.1 IP, 15 H, 3 HR, 2 BB, 1 SO) vs.
PROV: Larry Bowling (24-R) (5-5 3.16 ERA 79.2 IP, 74 H, 7 HR, 17 BB, 42 SO)

Gonzalez gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings in a no decision in his last start for Daytona (A). It is best not to mention his last start for the Jays...

Bowling was 8-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 18 starts and 105.1 IP as a rookie last year. He was a Top 10 prospect. We faced him once and he beat us, but we scored 4 runs on 10 hits, 1 home run, no walks with no strikeouts in 7 innings.

Top of the First:
Leander Gooding grounds one to 2nd, but Andy Povich, the Gold Glover, makes a bad throw for an error! Mike Volkman lines out to center. Gooding steals 2nd! Glen Lewis grounds out to 2nd, Andy Povich showing why he won the Gold Glove, and Gooding goes to 3rd. Brian Porter pops out to 2nd...

Bottom of the First:

Steve McKee swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Tom Tye grounds out to 3rd. Billy Brown swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:

Bert Swope swings at the first pitch and pokes a hit to center. With 1 out, he steals 2nd! His first attempt ever! That so unnerves P Larry Bowling that he balks Swope to 3rd! Cal Doty takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Bart Daw grounds into a 4-6-3 double play....

Bottom of the Second:
Gus Milam takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Mike Hughes swings at the first pitch and doubles to left and Milam scores... 1 to 0, Steamrollers. Doug Bowers lines a hit to right center. Andy Povich draws a walk to load the bases up with no outs... T.R. Hunter grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Hughes scores and Bowers goes to 3rd. 2 to 0. Steamrollers. P Marco Gonzalez picks Hunter off at 1st! But that means P Larry Bowling is now at bat with 2 outs and a runner in scoring position.... He grounds a hit up the middle and Bowers scores... 3 to 0, Steamrollers.

Top of the Fourth:

Glen Lewis swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right and then steals 2nd. He tries to steal 3rd and gets thrown out.... Brian Porter lines a hit to center that would have scored Lewis from 2nd easily... The next two make outs.

Through 5 innings, the Steamrollers have 4 hits, 2 of them by their pitcher....

Bottom of the Seventh:
Andy Povich and T.R. Hunter lead off with back to back hits. The Bullpen got up after the first hit. P Larry Bowling bunts the runners up. Call to the Bullpen: Barry Finney (27-R). Steve McKee flies out to center and Povich tags up and scores. 4 to 0, Steamrollers. Tom Tye gets beaned. Billy Brown grounds a hit to left and Hunter scores... 5 to 0, Steamrollers.
