At long last, we are ready for opening day.
The first game in league history will see
Corey Kluber of the
Homestead Grays take the mound against the visiting
Houston Colt 45's and
Roy Oswalt.
We've gone through a month of Spring Training, with many rosters changing dramatically during that time. Final notes--including a small flurry of trades on the final day of ST
are here.
The WBL is a 20 team league with 2 levels of minor leagues. There is also an independent, 3-tier league, but we'll learn more about them later. Right now, all the focus is on the majors.
The league also includes the output from a several-decades pet project aimed at projecting NeL performance into a MLB context. So not only is
Pete Hill in the league as a likely star,
Carlos Moran is there as a decent player, and
Luis Bustamente will appear at some point as a good field no hit SS.
The league is cross-era, with teams seeded through MLB franchises, which should be fairly identifiable. So, the Los Angeles Angels were born of the Angels and the Mets, and their opening day roster includes
Doc Gooden and
Nolan Ryan and
Mike Trout and
John Stearns. Ryan, however, is 23, and will start the season in long relief: he has promise, but he's a couple years away from dominance.
More information at each team's home page (
Los Angeles Angels) and more info on the "seed" player concept
here.
Each team has information tracking their rosters from the start of Spring Training to the end. For example, the
Chicago American Giants.
There are also Season Previews for each team, for example, the
Birmingham Black Barons.
I will be manually playing all of the WBL games, and my goal is to post here at the end of each "series" on the schedule with an update focused on a single matchup and some notes form around the league.
I'm not in a rush, so it could take a while.
Hope it's enjoyable.
