P Spencer Shuff (33-R) was sent back to Daytona (A) and 1B Rick Tuttle (34-R) was recalled. He was 4 for 36 (.111) for the Jays earlier, but is hitting .342 in August for the Tortugas. Unless we want to call up a slacker, the only choice was between him and LF Barry Laskowski (34-R), who is 1 for his last 16.... Editor's Note: The team would actually be better served by calling up a relief pitcher to go with a 6 man Bullpen since our starters get knocked out early so often, but that seems like it would be cheating. The A.I. does not have that choice and must stick to a 5 man Bullpen, unless we change it for everyone. In to 70's and 80's you would be hard pressed to find a team with an 11 man pitching staff....

Columbus Explorers (55-64 .462 15 GB in 8th (last) place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (39-79 .331 28 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division)

COL: Frank Lytle (27-R) (3-1 4.13 ERA 48 IP, 48 H, 3 HR, 30 BB, 39 SO) vs.
JAX: Mackie Reed (29-R) (6-9 4.51 ERA 143.2 IP, 164 H, 17 HR, 49 BB, 56 SO)

Lytle began the season in their rotation, but only got 1 start in May, 1 start in June and none in July due to injuries. We have not faced him. He gave up 3 runs, on 6 hits and 6 walks with 4 strikeouts in 8 innings in a no decision last time out.

Reed has lost 5 starts in a row, but has gone at least 6 innings every time. Last time out, he gave up 5 runs on 7 hits, 2 home runs and 3 walks with 1 strikeout in 6 innings.

And yet another new record low attendance....

Top of the First:
Jorge Moreida lines a hit to right center... And P Mackie Reed calls out Trudy the Trainer.... New Pitcher: Roger Wallace (26-R), the only fresh arm in the Pen... Mike Brewer grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Gabriel Beltran bloops a hit to left. Tim Brantley lines out to short!

Bottom of the First:
Frank Roadman pops out to short. Cal Doty strikes out... Joe Roberts lines one hard to deep left, but it is caught...

Bottom of the Second:

Tony Becerra takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Brian Porter grounds a hit to center. Dennis Brown hits a home run to right center!!! 3 to 0, Jays!

Bottom of the Third:
Cal Doty walks on 4 pitches, but gets caught stealing... Joe Roberts lines one to 2nd, but Tim Dawson cannot catch it for an error! Tony Becerra lines a double to right center. Brian Porter pops out to 2nd... Dennis Brown grounds a hit up the middle and both runners score! 5 to 0, Jays!

It starts to rain in the top of the 5th. It would be real nice to our Bullpen if this game gets stopped early.

Bottom of the Fifth:
On the Hill: Warren Wynn (31-R), after 1.1 scoreless innings. With 1 out, Tony Becerra hits a home run to right center! 6 to 0, Jays!

Top of the Sixth:
On the Hill: Bill Grant (30-L), after a perfect 5th. Marc Barksdale grounds a hit up the middle and Cal Doty misplays the ball for his 9th error of the season... With 1 out, a wild pitch sends the runner to 3rd. Jorge Moreida swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to right and Barksdale scores. 6 to 1, Jays. The next two make outs!

Top of the Ninth:

On the Hill: Barry Finney (26-R), after 2 perfect innings. Jorge Moreida and Mike Brewer lead off with back to back hits. The Bullpen got up after the first hit. It finally stops raining. Gabriel Beltran walks on 4 pitches to load them up with no outs. Call to the Bullpen: Jim Kenzy (33-R). Tim Brantley swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left and a run scores... 6 to 2, Jays. Robert Duenas swings at the first pitch and grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and a run scores and Beltran goes to 3rd! 6 to 3, Jays. Tim Dawson grounds out to 3rd and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!

Won - 6 to 3

We finish the season series with Columbus 5-3.
They are the only team we have a winning record against right now.
We split the series with Hartford, 4-4, and have a losing record against everyone else.

We had 5 whole hits and made 1 error
Columbus had 7 hits (all singles) and made 1 error

Mackie Reed faced 1 batter and gave up a hit.
RHP Roger Wallace (W 5-2) went 4 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 5. At bat, he drew a walk.
LHP Bill Grant went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits and struck out 1. Hen threw a WP.
RHP Barry Finney went 2+ innings, allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.
RHP Jim Kenzy (SV 1) pitched a scoreless inning and allowed 1 hit.

Frank Lytle (L 3-2) went 2.2 innings, gave us 5 runs (3 earned), 4 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out 2.

CF Cal Doty had one of his best games ever! He went 0 for 3 with 3 strikeouts and made an error... He did draw a walk, but got caught stealing to make up for it! 1B Tony Becerra hit a double and his 12th home run of the season, drew a walk and scored 2 runs. RF Dennis Brown had 2 hits with his 5th home run and 5 RBI, tying the Jays record set by Mike Volkman back in June.

For Columbus, Jorge Moreida had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Trudy's report on P Mackie Reed is a mild shoulder strain that should affect him for about a week... That means we will need another spot starter....
