Star Rating vs Skill Ratings

Been really trying to better understand how to put together a game lineup, and some questions have started filtering into my brain... Maybe you can help answer them.

1) What's most important when determining a player's performance, Star Rating, Skill Ratings, or Role Rating. For example, should my first line center be
A) a 4.5 star guy with average skills in important stats (like passing, shooting, etc.) and 15 skill rating in the role I chose for him (say Playmaker)... or
B) a 3.5 star player with great skills in the areas where that my tactics require (like offensive skills like passing, shooting, Offensive Read, etc.), and 15 skill rating in his role, or
C) a 3.5 star player with similar skills to the 4.5 player but a 19 Playmaker role skill.

I understand the role numbers come from the skills, but let's just say the best role for each player is 15 for A and B and 19 for C, whatever it may be.

2. How much difference do tactics and role setting make in performance? I have a bunch of players with good speed, shooting accuracy, and offensive read (all 16+), and I have tactics set to high tempo, intense pressure, and shooting often. Will that make a difference in their performance, good or bad? Is it enough to matter whether I use bland tactics or specific tactics to the player's skill sets?

3. How does everything work together? It really seems that, even if a 5 star player seems average in a lot of skills, he performs better than a 3.5 star player with amazing skills.

Anyway, the reason that I ask is because I've been seeing this kind of thing and it makes me very confused: I have a 2.5 star LW on my fourth line and a 4.5 star LW on my first line. They are both playmakers, the fourth line guy is 18 playmaker and the 1st line guy is 14 playmaker. I had the 2.5 star guy starting for a month or so, and he performed really poorly in comparison to the 4.5 star guy. So I put my best star rated players at the top of my lineup, and they seem to have better stats but the team seems to perform worse in W/L, which is what's ultimately important... I'm just lost at how to set a lineup and tactics. I'd just hire a coach, but I want to understand how it works and do it myself

Thanks for reading the semi-rant and for any helpful tips or explanations on how things work!!
