Get to Know Your Settlements, Owners, and Corporations

Today in the CBO

Settlements Today

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

25 May 2297 - Diamond City

On certain Tuesdays for the 2297 season, we will feature one of the settlements, teams, and owners of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization. This is meant to tell you more about life in the Commonwealth, as well as give you more information about the teams and their owners. These will be done at Nat Wright-Kowalski's availability

In our twenty-second installment of "Settlements Today," I went nowhere. No, I stayed home. In all of the Boston-area of the Commonwealth, Diamond City is the one area that has semblance of an urban lifestyle.

Of course, Diamond City has now changed its location, though the name has remained. Before, DC was located inside The Great Green Jewel.

Diamond City 2287 - When the city was inside The Great Green Jewel

According to a terminal on the past of Diamond City, "Diamond City was founded in the 2130s in Fenway Park[2] and quickly established itself as a safe haven for settlers of the Commonwealth, thanks to what its residents affectionately referred to as "the Wall." Later decades saw Diamond City grow into the Commonwealth's largest and most prosperous community.[3] It developed a degree of social stratification as wealthier residents came to occupy properties in the settlement's exclusive upper stands; these overlooked the lower field where everyone else strived to make a living.[4]

"In 2180, the Commonwealth Minutemen defended the city from an attacking horde of super mutants. This caused the faction's eventual rise to fame."

The first Institute attack came in "The Broken Mask Incident" in 2299 "when a man calling himself Mr. Carter arrived. At first, the people of the city warmed to Mr. Carter, but while he was drinking at the bar that occupied the center of Diamond City's marketplace, he went berserk and killed several residents. When security personnel killed Mr. Carter, they discovered he was a synth created by the Institute. From that moment on, the people of Diamond City lived in fear that they would be covertly replaced by synths."

There is more history to the city. Read the terminal entry here: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Diamond_City

When Nate Howard arrived, the first person he met was the one and only Piper Wright who was in a tiff with then-mayor McDonough. While the city was concerned by the citizens disappearing without a trace, the mayor was not. He also kicked all ghouls out of the city. Unbeknownst to the citizens, McDonough himself was a synth replacement of the human McDonough, John Hancock's brother. Diamond City eventually became a central hub in Nate's investigation into the disappearance of his son and the development of a centralized government.

After Nate had brought peace to the Commonwealth, Mayor McDonough was ousted and Nate's friend Robert MacCready took over the post. MacCready was born "in 2265 in the Capital Wasteland to parents he never knew, MacCready became the head of the Little Lamplight children's colony in 2274, when he was only ten years old. After Princess declared herself the new Mayor and renamed the position after herself, her rule lasted about five minutes, until MacCready punched her in the face and stated that Little Lamplight needed a leader, not a princess. MacCready's coup resulted in him becoming mayor. The other residents respected him for his smarts, toughness and the juvenile lack of fear of anything – be it monsters, adults or using his rifle on anything that looked at him funny, not to mention the ability to maintain Little Lamplight as a viable community."

As a mayor, MacCready is considered a good leader. His ability to be diplomatic when necessary and decisive in other situations has shown a wisdom that few others can exhibit. Only Nate Howard himself could be a more popular male.

Diamond City - City of Lights

Owner - Moe Cronin

When Nate Howard met Moe, Moe was known as "a 'baseball' enthusiast," who "sells customized baseball equipment and apparel for the sole purpose of killing." Moe believed that "baseball was: two teams armed with deadly modified baseball bats battling to the death. The baseball bats of the surviving winners of the game were called 'swatters' and therefore set the tradition of 'next-generation baseball.' He also believe[d] that baseballs were given to the children of dead players, baseball gloves were used to absorb bullets, and that baseball cards kept track of a player's kills."

Once Nate taught Moe about "real" baseball, Moe took a liking to that sport better than the one he made up in his mind. Moe asked Nate that he use his business to be the official bat of the CBO, and that's how Swatters, Inc. moved from being a business that made swatters as kill weapons and into baseball bats that have led to over 1500 home runs and counting.
