Decided to boot up a random debut starting in 1965 today. Turned out to be on one of the craziest initial drafts I've ever seen, but also made me realize there's a pretty big problem with the random debut draft.
First of all, it's absolutely insane that Chicago was able to grab an 18 year old Wayne Gretzky, an 18 year old Alex Ovechkin, and a 22 year old Mike Bossy in the same draft. Arguably the three greatest goal scorers of all time will be on the same line, and they're all just beginning their careers essentially. Even taking a look at the rest of that Chicago team, it's easy to see they will probably win at least 10+ Stanley Cups over the next two decades. Also, the rest of the talent pool in this draft is off the charts as well.
However, then I started to realize (and I'm not sure why I've never noticed this before), that the draft was not a snake draft. Why does Chicago get the 1,7, and 13 overall draft picks? Boston should have gotten 6 and 7. And if they did, this ridiculous team would have never been allowed to form. I never noticed that the random debut initial drafts weren't snake drafts, but they ABSOLUTELY need to be changed to be so.
