Team Building Concerns

Thinking more about the overall composition of the team and our talent pipeline.

  • There's a dearth of real star power in the minors. Reading up on dynasty building in the game, it seems like I should be checking in on high-rated players on other teams on the regular to see if they can be pried away from their current teams. I haven't specifically targeted those players in the past, but a good chunk of my team has traditionally been built from minor leaguers from other teams.
  • We need to free up space on the 40 man roster. There's a lot of dead wood in there...
  • Something I seem to be doing well is pulling in the right International Free Agents. I've been especially lucky with pitchers from Japan.
  • Most of my success in the draft has been with players almost ready for the majors. Early on,I was able to grab Hideo Nomo who was fantastic for me (you can see his name in the career pitching leaders above.) My second best selection was probably reliever Nelson Cruz, who has pitched in 248 games out of the bullpen with a career WHIP of just 1.05.
  • Overall, we have NOT done a great job of drafting our own talent though. It doesn't help that we lost a bunch of first round picks to get free agent pitchers like Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson, but this still can do with some improvement.
    • To help in this department we've been slowly edging up our spending on the draft, and we now spend roughly twice the league baseline.
    • I've also been edging up the amount spent on player development, which is also around twice the baseline.
