I'm sure this has been discussed on this forum before, as this has been a big for many, many versions. I'd really appreciate it if a mod or developer could chime in and explain.

It makes no sense to me why the following happens over and over:
Player A's demand: 5 years, $10 million/year
GM offer: 5 years, $8 million/year
Player A's counteroffer: 5 years, $12 million/year

Please explain to me why... EVERY TIME... the player's counteroffer is higher than their initial demand? Shouldn't it be somewhere between their demand and my offer, or at worst the exact same as their initial demand? The obvious (to me) way it should go is:

Player A's demand: 5 years, $10 million/year
GM offer: 5 years, $8 million/year
Player A's counteroffer: 5 years, $9.4 million/year

That's how negotiations work.
