COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 8
DUDLEY RUNS FOR 486 YARDS
Everyone knew Texas freshman running back Bill Dudley was special but the game he had this weekend against SMU almost defies reality. The back carried the ball 25 times for 485 yards as the Longhorns hammered SMU 80-9. Dudley also scored 6 touchdowns in the contest and added 2 pass receptions for an additional 20 yards. Entering the game Dudley was among the NCAA rushing leaders but now he has a lead of over 200 yards on the next closest rusher with 1,398 through the first 8 games of the season. He is just 73 yards shy of the single season mark set last year by Virginia senior Alex Stapleton. It is already the fifth time Dudley has rushed for over 100 yards in a game and his second straight week with over 200 yards.
In real life Dudley was an NFL Hall of Famer who played over a decade in the league after being selected first overall in the 1942 NFL draft. He was also an All-American his senior year at Virginia.
Speaking of the Cavaliers, it has been a rough season for the University of Virginia's football team. After going 11-1 and winning a bowl game last year the Cavaliers have limped through a 4-4 season this time around. UVA did get a measure of revenge on the only team to beat them a year ago, as the ended North Carolina State's hopes for a perfect season with a 44-22 win in Raleigh. The Wolfpack also fell from third in the AP poll to 9th following the defeat as their record drops to 7-1. Running back Jim Pike led the way for the Cavaliers with 101 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. At 3-1 in conference and owning a tiebreaker on the Wolfpack (4-1 in ACC play) the Cavaliers still have a chance to repeat as conference champions.
Notre Dame and Oklahoma remain as the only two unbeaten teams. The Irish are 8-0 following a 48-0 win over Navy while the Sooners won their 7th game, beating Iowa State 38-14. With North Carolina State and Ohio State losing to fall out of the top five, Alabama moves up two spots to third in the polls with 58-7 pounding of Mississippi State. A pair of one loss Pacific Coast Conference teams in California and Oregon State round out the top five. Cal won the head to head meeting between the two schools a few weeks ago and at 4-0 in conference has the upper hand on the Rose Bowl bid.

RECRUITING
Wisconsin landed the highest ranked recruit this week with the Badgers getting a committment from defensive back Tony Compagno. The 11th ranked recruit had been heavily pursued by most of the Western Conference teams as well as Oklahoma. It was a busy week for elite DB's with Max Kielbasa (#23 overall) signing with Iowa and Jim Reynolds (#31) agreeing to attend LSU.
The real-life Compagno played 3 seasons for the Steelers after playing college ball at St. Mary's of California. Kielbasa is in the Duquense Univesity Hall of Fame and is a Pittsburgh native who played 2 years for the Steelers while Reynolds played his college ball at Auburn and was a 6th round NFL draft pick in 1943 but played his only season of pro ball with the short-lived Miami Seahawks of the AAFC.
While none of the top "real" quarterbacks committed a few fictional guys just under the leaders did sign this week including Benjamin Medeiros, a Washington DC native who was ranked in the top 25 and signed with Tennessee. #26 ranked Kenneth Albrect also committed, signing with Michigan State.

NFL WEEK EIGHT
49ERS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT
The season may be just 2/3 completed but the San Francisco 49ers have already punched a ticket to the playoffs. The 8-0 Niners can finish no worse than second in the West Division after winning in Green Bay 29-3. Ernie Caddel, who leads the NFL in rushing, scored a pair of touchdowns and ran for 106 yards to key the San Francisco victory.
The Detroit Lions got a pair of touchdowns from rookie back Andy Uram to beat the Baltimore Colts 34-9. Lions defensive back Bob McChesney also had a big game, picking off a pair of Ace Parker passes including one he returned 80 yards for a touchdown.
Sammy Baugh completed 16 of 22 pass attempts for 165 yards and including a 4th quarter touchdown toss to Glenn Frey, lifting the Washington Redskins to a 16-10 victory at home over the New York Giants. The Redskins are one of three teams tied with a .625 winning percentage atop the East Division. The other two are Philadelphia and the Chicago Cardinals after the Eagles beat the Cardinals 19-7 on the weekend. Swede Johnston ran for 108 yards and a touchdown for the winners.
Cleveland won a kicking battle, getting a pair of 4th quarter field goals from Greg Grossman to top the Pittsburgh Steelers 9-6 while in Chicago the Bears kept their playoff hopes alive with a 16-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

GROUND GAME LEADS THE WAY FOR NINERS
The San Francisco 49ers remain unbeaten thanks to the most explosive running game in the NFL. Through 8 weeks the 49ers are averaging nearly 235 rushing yards per game while no other team in the league gains more than 175 yards per game. San Francisco's success, in addition to a strong offensive line, is spreading the load between Ernie Caddel, Mike Sebastian and fullback Julie Alphonse.
Caddell's 854 yards leads the league while Sebastian, with 577, remains in the top ten despite missing 2 games with a neck injury. Alphonse has chipped in with 366 yards on the ground. A year ago Sebastian finished third in the league with 1,034 yards while Caddel was 9th with 854.
In real life Caddel played his college ball at Stanford before joining the NFL's Portsmouth Spartans in 1933 and remained with the franchise after it's move to Detroit. He helped the Lions win an NFL championship in 1935 and led the NFL in average yards per carry three consecutive years. During his career he was known as the "Blond Antelope".
Sebastian, from Sharon, Pennsylvania was nicknamed "The Rose of Sharon" and he would play his college ball at Pitt where he was two-time All-American. He would only play two seasons in the NFL before knee and hip problems ended his playing career. He would later go on to be a high school coach and one of his star players was future NFL quarterback Babe Parilli.
Alfonse played his college ball at Minnesota and was a second round pick of the Cleveland Rams in 1937. He spent two seasons with Cleveland.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CARDINALS LEAD EXTENDED TO 4.5 GAMES ATOP N.L.
The St Louis Cardinals won 6 straight games, including 5 in a row to start the week before dropping a pair to Brooklyn over the weekend. The result is the Cardinals magic number to clinch their second straight National League Pennant is down to 9 games. The Chicago Cubs, losers of their last three straight, are now 4.5 games back of St Louis with 12 games to play (13 for the Cardinals). Included in those final two weeks is a 2 game series between the two clubs in the final week.
In the American League the New York Yankees surpassed the 100 win plateau for the third straight season. The highwater mark in those years was 106 in 1936 but with two weeks remaining New York is expected to top that total this time around.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: Hard to imagine anyone having a better rookie season that Joe Gordon has enjoyed this year. The first overall draft pick of the St Louis Browns is batting .303 with 35 homers and an American League leading 128 rbi's despite playing for one of the worst teams in baseball. Gordon has been named rookie of the month several times and this week was named the American League's top performer for the past seven days after batting .429 with 3 round-trippers. The National League award went to Chicago Cubs outfielder Phil Cavarretta (.313,12,108) who was 17 for 30 (.567) this week.
The two Cubs hitting streaks both came to an end last week. Stan Hack reached 29 games with his, tied with Mel Ott for the longest in the National League this season, while Joe Kuhel had his stall at 26 games. There is another active streak that is growing steam. This one belongs to John Stone of the Athletics and has reached 26 games. The longest streak since the sim began in 1936 belongs to Joe DiMaggio, who hit safely in 33 straight games in 1937.

BLUES CLINCH WILD CARD BUT SUFFER COSTLY LOSS
The Kansas City Blues officially clinched a playoff berth but their was little celebration around Muehlebach Field after word that pitcher Fred Gay's season has come to an end. The rookie lefthander, who was 19-9 with a 3.54 era this season, is the latest Blue to be sidelined this season. He joins pitcher Ted Kleinhans, who won 30 games last season and was a big reason the Blues won the American Series last year, and rookie catcher Clyde McCullough (.281,17,77) as definitely out for the series. Meanwhile veteran first baseman Dale Alexander (.336,9,60) remains hopeful he will be recovered enough from a torn hamstring to suit up when the Series begins in early October.
The Toledo Mud Hens officially clinched the regular season title this week. The Mud Hens, who finished second to Kansas City in the regular season last year and the pushed the Blues to the 7-game limit before succumbing in the Series, have an injury concern of their own. 25 year old pitching ace Gene Schott was off to a 16-4 start before going down with a hamstring injury in early August. He has been ruled out for a return in the Series.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION NOTES: For the third time this season and second time in less than a month, Columbus outfielder Enos Slaughter has been named the American Association player of the week. The 22 year old is in his second season with the Red Birds and is batting .335 with 15 homers and 84 rbi's on the year.
