COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK SIX
ALABAMA TOPS TENNESSEE
Charley Holm ran for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Alabama to a 35-21 victory over visiting Tennessee in Southeastern Conference action. The win moves 5-1 Alabama up in the polls to #4 while the Vols (3-1) drop from 3rd to 17th in the latest AP rankings.
Holm ran for both his touchdowns in the first half as the Tide built an early 14-0 lead before Tennessee quarterback George Cafego finally got his team going in the second half. Cafego started slow but finished with another strong game, passing for 155 yards and a touchdown while rushing from 17 more and another score. Alabama's Chuck DeShane, like Cafego also a junior, threw for 184 yards and also ran for a touchdown to help improve his squad to 3-1 in conference.
8th ranked Georgia leads the way in the SEC as the Bulldogs improved to 4-0 in conference (5-1 overall) with a 39-17 win on the road over Vanderbilt. Freshman back Curt Sandig led the Georgia offense with 2 touchdowns and 108 yards rushing. Staying in the SEC, LSU moved up to 16th in the polls as Young Bussey and Ken Kavanaugh teamed up on a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Tigers past Kentucky 33-16.
Notre Dame remains perfect at 6-0 and #1 in the polls following a 35-3 win at home over the University of Pittsburgh. Milt Piepul ran for 91 yards and a touchdown while Mario Tonelli gained 111 yards on the ground for the Irish.
Oklahoma, at 5-0, and North Carolina State, which narrowly survived Duke 26-20 to improve to 6-0, are the only other unbeaten teams in the top 10. Columbia, led by 195 passing yards, a passing touchdown and a rushing TD from Sid Luckman, is also unbeaten. The Lions topped Yale 28-17 to improve to 4-0 and break into the top twenty rankings at #17.
In addition to Tennessee, Arkansas fell from the top five with a loss to Texas. The Razorbacks landed at 14 in the polls after the 20-5 defeat to the Longhorns. Both schools are 4-2 on the year with Texas once again being led by freshman half back Bill Dudley, who ran for 101 yards and scored a touchdown.

RECRUITING
Baylor landed the top offensive lineman in getting tackle Rocco Canale to commit to the Bears. He is the second top 100 recruit to commit to Baylor, joining linebacker Bill Godwin. Canale, who was ranked 11th overall, was nicknamed the Walking Billboard in real life because of his brawny physique. He played 5 seasons in the NFL after a college career at Boston College.
Two other top 100 recruits committed this week. Linebacker Joe Domnanovich to Maryland while wideout Bruce Alford will attend Rice. Domnanovich is the 72nd ranked recruit and in real life was an All-American at Alabama before playing six seasons in the NFL. Alford played college ball at TCU and was MVP of the 1942 Orange Bowl before playing half a dozen seasons in the AAFL and NFL. He would become an NFL official after his playing days and worked three Super Bowls. His son Bruce Alford Jr, also played in the NFL.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEK SIX
BEARS GET FIRST VICTORY
Rookie quarterback Jack Berner engineered an 87 yard fourth quarter drive that culminated in a 7 yard touchdown to Ray Hanken giving the Chicago Bears their first victory of the season, as they downed the New York Giants 10-6 at Wrigley Field. The Giants controlled much of the game, led by 102 rushing yards from George Grosvenor, but the Chicago defense held strong in it's own territory on several occasions to preserve the upset win.
The Giants loss coupled with Philadelphia's 17-14 win over Baltimore allowed the Eagles to take over top spot in the East Division. As usual Philadelphia running back Swede Johnston had a strong game, gaining 83 yards rushing and 9 more on two catches from former Notre Dame quarterback Andy Puplis. Puplis was 14 of 21 for 122 yards and 1 touchdown to lead the Eagles, who's defense did a great job stopping Ace Parker and the Colts passing game. Parker completed just 7 passes for 41 yards.
Kink Richards ran for 136 yards to take over the NFL rushing lead but it was not enough to help his Chicago Cardinals generate points. The Cardinals were forced to settle for a 3-3 tie with the Steelers in Pittsburgh.
San Francisco remained perfect but the visiting Los Angeles Rams gave the 49ers a scare as they picked off a pair of Pat Coffee passes and returned both for touchdowns. It wasn't enough for the Rams to extend their unbeaten streak to three games as the 49ers prevailed 20-17 behind a 115 yard rushing day from Ernie Caddel. Caddel's backfield mate Mike Sebastian missed his second straight game with a neck injury.
Henry Money ran for a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns to help Detroit seal a 20-7 victory at home over the Green Bay Packers. The Lions completely dominated the game, gaining 413 yards of total offense compared to just 193 for the Packers but two Detroit turnovers kept Green Bay somewhat close.
In the other game Greg Grossman's 34 yard field goal with 3:28 remaining in the game lifted the Washington Redskins to a 10-9 victory over the Browns in Cleveland.
