I think this could be a good idea when making a FA an offer.
However when a player is already on your team I wouldn't think of it as modifying his expectations, his expectations are what they are. I would look at it as a way of defining the role you are going to give him. It will then fall to the player whether he accepts that role and becomes content or, continues to be upset and wants to be traded.
