As I think about this more I guess baseball requires you to be on the expanded active roster to be on the playoff roster which would make sense.
But all the way until 2019, the expanded active roster and the 40 man roster were basically the same thing, so you had a lot more choices. Now, though, do you have to demote someone, if there are at least 3 active people you want to replace for a playoff round?
