Now it's time to introduce you to Austin Nickas, the current pitching coach of the Great Plains Bisons. I'll try not to make this post too long, but please continue to bear with me, if it's still a bit long for your tastes here, everyone.
Austin Nickas was born on August 14, 1894 in West Babylon, New York, as the oldest son and child of his parents Lloyd and the former Eileen Mitchell. He spent most of his childhood growing up on Long Island except for a few years spent in and/or around Washington, D.C., while his father served in Congress as a Whig member of the House of Representatives. When his father was voted out of office after two terms, the family returned to Long Island full-time.
It wasn't long after he was graduated from high school in Sag Harbor that Austin found himself joining the United States Army and serving as an intelligence officer of some sort, mainly as a code-breaker, but also as a deep-cover operative when necessary. It was fairly rare when he had to kill enemies to complete assigned missions as such, but he still killed people when needed. He didn't like having to periodically do so. But he realized that sometimes in war, such events had to happen every so often, unfortunately.
He left the Army not long after the end of World War I, and eventually found himself in Texas, having decided to try and see more of the United States than he'd ever really had a chance to see before in his life. It was while he was still in northern Texas near Amarillo that he met the love of his life, one Grace Campbell, a native of Slaabovia, while both were attending college classes at Wayland Baptist University. In due time, both were graduated from there at the same time, while also beginning a relationship there. Grace and Austin married each other in 1923, within two months of being graduated from there. Settling ultimately in Nebraska, near Scottsbluff, they began their life together. They spent the first five or so years beginning their family together, starting with Nicotomo in 1925 and Keireina in 1928. Those two were followed eventually by Hercules Percy in 1932, Aurora Calypso in 1935, Gregory in 1939, and Jocelyn in 1943. They don't know it yet, but triplets are on the way already for them, likely to be born in late September or early October, at the earliest.
Austin and his immediate family members now live in the Bellevue area, after spending most of the last decade or so living out in western Nebraska, just south of Omaha. They typically raise cattle and plant wheat, corn, and various other crops on their farm, if and whenever they can. Their two oldest children decided to attend college in Slaabovia, so Austin and the rest of his family won't likely be seeing much of Nicotomo or Keireina for a while. Austin wishes them both well in a land he's never been to, of course.
A picture or pictures of him will be shared later as possible, necessary, appropriate, and/or desired, I'm sure, folks, Lord willing. But it may be a while before that happens, just the same, I think. I'll try to come back as soon as I can here with a suitable enough profile for the Bisons' hitting coach for you to view later. Until the next post in this thread, at least, then, I'll close this post here. CD out.
