NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEK FIVE
49ERS CONTINUE TO ROLL
Despite an injury that forced league rushing leader Mike Sebastian to miss the game the San Francisco 49ers had more than enough offense to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-6 and improve to 5-0 on the season. The Steelers did a much better job than most teams in keeping the league's top offense in check but they could only slow down, rather than stop, the 49ers vaunted rushing attack. Ernie Caddel led the San Francisco offense with 112 yards rushing and scored a first quarter touchdown while fullback Julie Alfonse chipped in with 86 yards on the ground.
The co-leaders in the East Division each came up with a victory in Week Five. In New York, the Giants dumped Cleveland 27-10 behind a huge day from running back George Grosvenor, who scored 3 touchdowns and gained 135 yards on the ground. The Chicago Cardinals kept pace with the Giants by stopping Detroit at home 31-14. Kink Richards ran for 101 yards while Cardinals quarterback Steve Perz passed for 128 including a touchdown to end William Stamps, who leads the NFL in receiving yards.
The news from the other Chicago team remains bad as the hapless Bears dropped to 0-5 with a 15-7 loss in Baltimore. Ace Parker led the Colts to their second win of the season, passing for 165 yards and one touchdown.
In Philadelphia, Swede Johnston ran for 101 yards while backup running back Cliff Battles scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a 29-0 shutout of Washington despite another strong game from Redskins quarterback Sammy Baugh, who completed 20 of 29 passes for 149 yards. Washington's issue is they are dead last in rushing yardage which leaves Baugh constantly scrambling as teams key on the pass.
The other game saw the Los Angeles Rams rally from a 19-6 half-time deficit to tie the Green Bay Packers 19-19. A 24 yard touchdown pass from Joe Bartlette to Charles Jessup with 6 minutes remaining allowed the Rams to salvage the tie. After dropping their first 3 games the Rams have earned a victory and a tie.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK FIVE
NOTRE DAME SURVIVES SCARE FROM MIAMI
Mario Tonelli ran for a pair of second half touchdowns to help Notre Dame rally from a 14-6 first half deficit and remain unbeaten with a 20-17 victory over the Hurricanes in Miami. Tonelli would rush for 83 yards on the day increasing his team leading season total to 573.
With Oregon State losing 26-20 to California, the Oklahoma Sooners took over second spot in the poll with a 33-30 overtime win (game requires me to use overtime) at home over Texas. It was a sloppy game for the Longhorns, who fumbled the ball 7 times including a pair by quarterback Sammy Hicks. Four of those fumbles were recovered by the Sooners. One Texas player who did not fumble and continues to have an outstanding freshman season is running back Bill Dudley. Dudley rushed for 83 yards and scored his 8th touchdown of the season. On the year, the top recruit from last season has rushed for 611 yards through the first five games.
Tennessee is now ranked third at 3-0 after thumping 0-5 Georgia Tech 57-7. Vols quarterback George Cafego threw for 140 yards while also rushing for 127 and two touchdowns in the win.

RECRUITING
Mississippi State may not have had much on field success, losing 27-25 to Florida State Saturday to fall to 1-4 on the year and they were just 2-9 last season but they did land the highest rated recruit to sign this week. Quarterback Roy McKay, who was ranked #12 overall and 6th at his position has committed to the Bulldogs. It is a big position of need for Mississippi State with sophomore Billy Jefferson as their only QB under scholarship at the moment.
McKay played his college ball at Texas in real life before being drafted by Green Bay in the 5th round of the 1943 NFL draft. He played 4 seasons with the Packers and is best known for throwing 4 touchdown passes to Don Hutson in one quarter in a game against Detroit. That allowed Hutson to set the all-time NFL scoring record for most points in a quarter.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CARDINALS EXTEND NL LEAD
The St Louis Cardinals performed well enough in 10 games over the past week and a half against their two chief rivals for the National League Pennant that they were able to extend their lead. The defending World Series champs started slow by dropping two of three games at home to Chicago and the opener of a 4 game set with the New York Giants but they rebounded with 5 wins in their final 6 games by taking 3 straight from New York at Sportsman's Park and then winning two of three in Wrigley.
The result is St Louis has extended it's lead to 6 games over second place Chicago and 9.5 on the Giants.

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: Red Ruffing earned his 200th career victory this week. The 33 year old New York Yankees righthander went the distance in his milestone game, stopping Chicago 10-4 on 7 hits. On the season, Ruffing is 19-5 with a 2.91 era and trying to match his career high for wins in a season of 27 set in 1936. He is 200-180 lifetime and is tied with George Uhle for 47th on the all-time wins list. Cy Young leads the way with 511 victories.
A week ago Brooklyn's Frenchy Bordagaray hit for the cycle in a game against Boston. Exactly one week later the Bees Gene Moore duplicated the feat by hitting for the cycle in Boston's 10-6 win over the Dodgers.
Hal Trosky continues to slug for the Cleveland Indians. The 25 year old outfielder was named American League player of the week after hitting 4 homers and driving in 12 last week. Trosky (.339,40,98) is on pace to become the first player to hit 50 homers in a seasons since Jimmie Foxx did it in 1932. Trosky's 40th homer of the year established a new personal best for him. Brooklyn catcher Babe Phelps (.362,7,53) was named the National League player of the week after going 11-for-25 with 2 homers.
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION
The hottest team in the American Association is the Columbus Red Birds, who have won 15 of their last 18 games. The Red Birds have gained 6 games on Kansas City for the second playoff berth in that span but are still 10.5 games behind the Blues with just over a month remaining in the season. However, Columbus' chances of catching the Blues seems unlikely as the clubs only have 5 head-to-head games remaining.
Kansas City's hopes for reeling in Toledo for first place pretty much disappeared last week after the Mud Hens took 3 of 4 games between the two clubs with each Toledo win coming by just a single run. The Mud Hens have won 24 of their last 30 games and have built a comfortable 10 game lead on Kansas City atop the standings.
