NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEK TWO
NINERS RUSHING GAME TOO MUCH FOR PACKERS
The three headed rushing attack of the San Francisco 49ers was in perfect form once again in week two as the Niners gained 282 yards on the ground and dominated the time of possession in a 21-13 win at home over Green Bay. Ernie Caddel again led the way with 96 yards on 24 carries including a touchdown run. Mike Sebastian chipped in with 89 yards while Jules Alfonse added 86 and a touchdown of his own. The three San Francisco backs are all in the top six rushing leaders in the league after two weeks. The loss overshadowed a decent second game from Packers rookie signal caller Wendell Wear, who completed 9 of 13 passes for 96 yards, and linebacker Pug Rentner, who had 12 tackles, including four for losses for the Packers.
The Detroit Lions joined San Francisco as 2-0 teams in the West Division after they tamed the Chicago Bears 27-7 on the road. Running back Robert Perryman led the Detroit offense with 70 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.
The New York Giants are the only unbeaten team in the East Division after they won at home over Washington by a 13-6 score. George Grosvenor ran for 98 yards while Giants QB Emmett Mortell passed for 105 yards and a score in the game, overshadowning Washington sophomore Sammy Baugh, who threw for 119 yards but also tossed a third quarter interception that led to a New York field goal.
The Chicago Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers are both 1-1 after the Cardinals, behind 5 Riley Smith field goals, beat Pittsburgh 15-7.
Baltimore needed a last minute field goal from Robert Bowens to trim the Los Angeles Rams 13-10. Ace Parker had a strong game at quarterback for the Colts, completing 19 of 21 pass attempts for 136 yards in the win that allowed the Colts to even their record at 1-1.
Clevlenad beat Philadelphia 19-14 to drop the Eagles to 0-2 on the season. Whizzer White's first quarter touchdown got the Browns off to a good start. White would carry the ball 19 times for 65 yards but be overshadowed by Eagles back Swede Johnston, who had 20 carries for 120 yards in the contest.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK TWO
The first AP poll of the season was released and Alabama holds down the top spot following two victories to start the season including a 50-0 lambasting of Kansas State on the weekend. Senior running back Charley Holm led the way for the Tide, scoring 3 touchdowns and rushing for 177 yards in the game. His backup, freshman Edgar Jones, also had a big day scoring a pair of touchdowns and gaining 125 yards rushing. Alabama, which beat Texas 40-34 in it's opening game, faces a stiff test next week in their SEC opener, a road game against 9th ranked Florida.
The Gators had their SEC opener on Saturday and came away with a 13-0 victory over Mississippi State. Woody Fox threw for 145 yards and a touchdown to lead the Florida offense. Georgia and Mississippi are also 2-0 and give the SEC four teams in the top ten. The Bulldogs won a shootout 55-44 over LSU while Ole Miss handed Auburn it's second straight loss, winning 49-13 behind Bill Schneller's incredible game. The Rebels junior back scored 6 touchdowns while rushing for 177 yards.
Notre Dame followed up an opening week win over Auburn with a 21-12 victory in their home opener against Northwestern. Sophomore Milt Piepul ran for a game high 109 yards for the Irish.
The University of California is ranked #2 after a 38-10 win at home over West Virginia. Sophomore quarterback Bill Elmore had a big game for the Bears, passing for 113 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 58 and adding another score.
Defending National Champion Michigan rounds out the top five after a 45-3 dismantling of Virginia. Sophomore quarterback Forest Evashevski threw for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Wolverines. The Cavaliers fall to 0-2 after an 11-1 season a year ago that was capped with a win over Notre Dame in the Sun Bowl.

RECRUITING
We see our first top 100 recruit commit to a school this week as quarterback Cullen Rogers has decided to attend Clemson next year. Rogers is a 4-star recruit who is ranked 70th over all. In real life Rogers played his college ball at Texas A&M before playing 5 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1946 after being selected in the 16th round of the 1943 NFL draft. As a senior at Texas A&M, Rogers captained both the school football and baseball teams.

CARDINALS END JULY WITH 8 STRAIGHT WINS
It seems one of the three challengers for the National League pennant is always on a winning streak and the current streak belongs to the St Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals finished July with 8 straight victories and have opened up a three and a half game lead on both the Chicago Cubs and New York Giants.
Johnny Mize had the hot bat for St Louis last week, going 10-for-20 with a pair of homers and 12 rbi's in 6 games. However, it really seemed every St Louis player came up big last week including their latest addition, Luke Appling, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox mid-week and enjoyed a five hit game in leading the Cardinals to an 8-7 win over the Boston Bees on Saturday. The 31 year old shortstop was hitting .324 for the White Sox this season. St Louis acquired him to replace Leo Durocher (.253,1,43) in the starting line-up, sending Durocher to the bench and three young players in Dutch Meyer. Oscar Grimes and Bill LeFebvre to the Windy City. Only Meyer had played in the majors prior to the trade this year and he only had 3 plate appearances. St Louis also added some pitching depth at the deadline, acquiring 29 year old lefthander Ralph Birkofer (4-7, 5.48) from the Athletics in exchange for seldom used infielder Ripper Collins (.387,2,11).

MAJOR LEAGUE NOTES: Johnny Mize (.369,30,91) grabbed a pair of awards today as he was named both the National League player of the week and player of the month. The top pitcher for July was his St Louis teammate Bill Hallahan (11-5, 2.73) while 21 year old second baseman Dario Lodigiani made it a clean sweep for the Cardinals by winning rookie of the month accolades. Lodigiani is batting .281 with 6 homers and 41 rbi's on the season after being selected 15th overall in the winter draft.
Cleveland's Bob Feller went 4-1 in July to earn the nod as top American League pitcher for the month. On the season the fireballing 19 year old is 11-6 with a 3.22 era and a major league leading 135 strikeouts. Jimmie Foxx (.330,23,80) was named player of the month after hitting .402 in July with 6 homers and 26 rbi's while the top rookie for the third straight month is first overall draft pick Joe Gordon of the St Louis Browns. The 22 year old Gordon is batting .288 with 22 homers and 88 rbi's on the year.
Jimmie Foxx hit his 400th career homerun last week in a 10-5 Boston win over the Philadelphia Athletics. It came in the third inning with 1 man on base off of A's starter Eddie Smith. Foxx joins the now retired Babe Ruth (714) and current Yankee Lou Gehrig (476) as the only players to reach the 400 plateau.
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION
The Toledo Mud Hens finished off the month of July with 13 wins in their last 15 games to stretch their lead atop the American Association standings to 5 games over the Kansas City Blues. The Mud Hens and Blues are the only teams over .500 after third place Minneapolis limped through week, dropping 5 of 7 games to fall 14.5 games out of a playoff spot. The Millers did indeed limp as a pair of starters in 2B John Mihalic (.249,3,42) and third baseman Fresco Thompson (.316,4,42) both went down with bone fractures recently.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION NOTES: It was a quiet trade deadline as no moves were made by any teams prior to the July 31 cut-off date. The playoff positions are pretty well solidified, which was likely a major factor in the lack of deals as it seems extremely unlikely any of the other six clubs will challenge Kansas City for the second playoff berth.
Speaking of the Blues, they captured a pair of monthly awards as 24 year old lefthander Fred Gay (15-7, 3.44) was named the rookie of the month after winning 5 of his 6 decisions in July. His teammate Al Hollingsworth was named the pitcher of the month after also going 5-1 in July. On the season the 30 year old lefthander is 16-3 with a 3.32 era.
The top hitter for July comes from the last place Louisville Colonels as outfielder Joe Vosmik hit .398 with 4 homers, 15 rbi's and 15 runs scored last month. On the season Vosmik is batting .346 with 8 homers and 58 rbi's.
22 year old Columbus sophomore outfielder Enos Slaughter (.321,7,53) earned player of the week honours after hitting .538 (14-for-26) with 2 homers last week.
