How many years does a player have to play for one team in order to have his jersey number retired automatically? I've often thought it to be 8 or more. Does anyone know?
I recently had a journeyman pitcher get inducted into the Hall-of-Fame who played for 6 different teams over an 18 year career, but none of those teams retired his jersey number. He had a lengthy 5 year run with the team he got inducted with, but they didn't retire his number. I wish one of those teams had. Regardless, does anyone know how many years a guy needs to remain with one team?
