Cleveland struggled at 15-14 in May, which allowed New York, St. Louis and Washington to become equal parts of the early pennant race. Each of those teams were at least tied for the lead at some point during the month. The Highlanders currently lead the league after going 18-12 on the month. All of these four teams are no more than 1-game out. However, the Browns will be without their ace Raymond Gindler until early July. He left his May 19 start with elbow pain.

Pittsburgh went 18-9 in May to put a charge into the NL pennant race. Cincinnati went 16-11. The Reds took first place briefly before a late-month slump. The Phillies remain in first place, currently 1.5 games ahead of the surprising Pirates.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Floyd Kubitzki, SS, Washington Senators - He hit .413 with 17 RBI and 14 runs scored.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit an unprecedented .490 with 16 RBI and 24 runs scored!!! He leads the NL with a .440 average.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Jeremy Kalandros, Washington Senators - He was 6-0 with a 0.67 ERA, including 2 shutouts.

NL - David Nelson, Cincinnati Reds - He was 5-1 with a 1.23 ERA.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He had one of his best months, hitting .429 (9 for 21) with 7 RBI and 5 runs scored. The everyday 1B, Lukas Pottinger is 37, but he's hitting .341 on the season and remaining the starter.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .266 (17 for 64) with 2 RBI and 7 runs scored. He was inserted in the #2 slot as the starting CF when the everyday CF Bill Prugh was hit by a pitch on May 19 and missed the rst of the month. Prugh is expected to be back in 2 days, though.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Dummy had a horrendous May, going 0-3 with a 10.62 ERA in 4 starts. He is 1-7 with a 6.71 ERA on the season.
