I remember pulling the numbers at one point, when a friend and I were discussing Ryan and Tom Seaver.

I know that wins are an iffy comparison, but that was the first stat we looked at and Nolan's win percentage usually mirrored the teams while Tom's would be a couple hundred points over it.

When Nolan was "ON" he was amazing. I remember listening to Reds games and realizing that yeah, the Reds had left 7 on base in 3 innings, but they were all on walks and we hadn't hit a ball during those three innings. Unless he walked 4, we weren't going to score. The problem was, he wasn't consistently "ON".

He was going to give you 300 innings, wasn't going to get hurt and was going to give you memorable moments. However, if you were a .500 team, he was going to be a .480-.520 pitcher, if you were a .400 team, he was going to be .380-.420.

His longevity and his strikeouts were stupendous, his effectiveness, IMO, was not.
