Final Cuts - April 6, 1980
Starting Pitchers - Juan Berenguer, Mark Bomback, Pete Falcone, Craig Swan, Pat Zachry
The starting pitching battle ended pretty much as expected with Juan Berenguer and Mark Bomback winning the fourth and fifth starting roles. Ray Burris was unable to secure a spot in the rotation. Mike Scott and John Pacella were the final two sent to the minors.
Relief Pitchers - Neil Allen, Ray Burris, Ed Glynn, Roy Lee Jackson, Jeff Reardon, Dave Von Ohlen
Tom Dixon just doesn't have the stamina to be a long reliever but he pitched better this spring than I expected. He might end up being decent depth in case of injury but for now will have to work out of the minor leagues. Burris pitched well enough to start but we really need a long reliever and he is ok with coming out of the bullpen.
Infielders - Wally Backman, Kelvin Chapman, Doug Flynn, Mike Jorgensen, Elliott Maddox, Frank Taveras
Neither Moreno or Chapman played particularly great but Chapman has major league experience and is more versatile in the field. But we really need to improve our bench. Moreno may get another chance quickly if Chapman doesn't play well.
Catchers - Ron Hodges, John Stearns, Alex Trevino
Demoted Lloyd McClendon to the Tidewater Tides.
Outfielders - Jose Cardenal, Steve Henderson, Lee Mazzilli, Dan Norman, Joel Youngblood
Ed Cipot and Gil Flores didn't do anything to change the depth chart and were the last two outfield prospects to be demoted.
