New York Mets hire new GM and Manager to change their fortunes
Feb 21, 1980 - After the worst 3 year stretch in Mets history since 1965-67, owner Trevor Brown has relieved GM Joe McDonald and Manager Joe Torre of their duties. Torre finishes his brief 2 1/2 year Mets career with an overall record of 178 wins, 263 losses and 1 tie. McDonald, who was promoted from recruiting director in 1974, oversaw the collapse of the Mets from the World Series in 73 and the infamous 1977 trade of Tom Seaver and finishes his Mets career 361-449-1. For the first time in Mets history, they are hiring a GM and Manager combo. Shaughnessy becomes the 6th GM in team history and the 9th Manager.
( I wanted to take over at a realistic time in Mets history but as much as I really wanted them to have Gooden and Strawberry, they would have had too much talent in their farm system at that point to make this a true rebuild. My settings are set true to the era. I have made trades hard and favoring veterans. 20-80 ratings. 30-50-10-10 ratings. And there will be a draft. Players will not be placed with their original teams. Fortunately or unfortunately, the 1980 draft has already happened and Darryl Strawberry and pre injury Tim Leary are in my system.)
